Hey all, just want to talk about my guy who recently took an interest in film making. He's into Black and White Silent films from the early 20's era and loves the films of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. He's so passionate that he tried to make a short film using his camcorder with some of his friends and it was really amazing. I was googling around and found out that the Australia Silent Film Festival was holding a festival and SO COINCIDENTALLY the one in my city (they do it in every city) starts this coming Friday!! I'm so excited that I just messaged him (even though it's 7am in the morning) to make himself available. The series of films include Chaplin, Keaton, Arbuckle and Lloyd and my boyfriend is going to squeal like a girl when he finds out because I'm going to surprise him. Just thought I'd share this piece of good news. Feeling very good right now. (!)
Hey thanks! Just wondering like are there people here on EC who are into Black and White Silent Films?
Omg that's so sweet! I hope you have a good time and I know he'll love it<3 And I do! I feel like there's a lot more thinking and emotion involved in silent films
This sounds like such a thoughtful and awesome idea! I've never seen a silent black and white film, but I do like a good number of black and white films, for what it's worth!
Here's one by Willard Van Dyke. It's quite funny to watch.
I've got the first two DVD box sets from the Film Preservation society - "Treasures" and "More Treasures". All old films that the society has preserved. Not all of them are black and white, but the vast majority are. Everything from early shorts to early features to newsreels to some really old "home movies". You might look into seeing if you can get it from Netflix or something. (The other box sets aren't bad, but they're more specific - protest films, westerns, and what not.) Lex
lol i'm sure you would do the same for yours. Nothing will be sexier than ferreting enough cash to get "Treasures" as mentioned by Lex I'd get it from Ebay but they seem to come in bits and pieces. Here's hoping some local shop has one stashed in some hiddly corner somewhere.
I have always wanted to see this movie o_o It is amaizing and is one of the most awesome Black & White silent films ever! I havent watched it but I've seen so many little clips and media references I feel I've seen it!
Hey Metropolis. I saw this one at one of my lectures at uni. It was a very amazing film and it even dates back to the 1920s.
They're on Amazon. This is the first pressing, which looks like it's going for a bit cheaper than the second pressing. Not cheap, but maybe you can save the link for a birthday or big Christmas gift. Lex
What's the difference between the first pressing and the encore edition? Seems like the price vary way too much I just went to the largest store in Melbourne and apparently they don't have it in Australia so I think I'll have to purchase it online. Yes, christmas is around the corner ---------- Post added 16th Oct 2011 at 10:40 PM ---------- Oh yea also do you think that I should get "Treasures" first or "More Treasures"?
