Default Transgender Day of Rememberance post

I post a thread on all the sites I belong to each year. Please let me know what you think of it? I'm trying to make sure it's all nice and ready to go.

Quote:
National Transgender Day of Remembrance - November 20th

What is National Transgender Day of Remembrance?
It is a day in November, set aside to honor and remember transgender people who were murdered… most likely for their perceived sexuality or for their gender expression. People take the day to raise awareness of transgender issues as well as mourn the loss of hundreds (if not thousands) of innocent people.

When did National Transgender Day of Remembrance begin?
“The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world.”
-- Transgender Day of Remembrance

Why is National Transgender Day of Remembrance important?
It is estimated that at least one transgender person per month is murdered. They are just people who are trying to be themselves, and who are just expressing their gender as they see fit. Some transgender people are your average citizens with a family and a job… some are students, and some are homeless and forced into prostitution in order to try and survive. Regardless of whom they were or what their gender was, all of those killed were someone’s mother or father, someone’s son or daughter, someone’s lover or someone’s friend. They did not, under ANY circumstance, deserve their fate.

One of those killed was a seven year old boy, who was killed by his mother’s boyfriend for being a “sissy”. Another was a young transwoman who was called by one of her (supposed) friends to a party, where she was gunned down on the front lawn. Yet another was killed in broad daylight in Washington DC outside the Transgender Health Empowerment building. When is this going to stop?

That’s what makes this month so important. People are getting dragged off the street, taken from buildings or trapped within their own homes and brutally having their lives ended for NO REASON other than who they are. Their murderers often say they “were tricked” or because they “thought” the person was some sort of abomination…and you know, they’re entitled to those thoughts/opinions. However. This isn’t about what people think, it’s about what people do with those thoughts and their actions towards living, thinking, feeling beings. The violence NEEDS to stop.

Gay, lesbian and bisexual people are slowly gaining more rights. While that’s good for them, transgender people have few rights and have historically been cut from legislation that called to protect them against hate crimes and the like. Murder, assault and suicide rates are also much higher. Yet people seem totally comfortable with pushing the issue under the rug, ignoring it or saying outright that transgender people “bring it on themselves”. Even the GLB community has, occasionally, thrown their T members under the bus by questioning if T should even be allowed in the community. All of it is utterly disgusting-- transgender people are people too, and deserve just as much respect and protection as anyone else.

The only way the violence and ignorance is going to stop is through education and awareness. The DoR is part of that. If only one person hears about this day and stops to think about things, and tries to make a change, that’s one more person out there who can:

Call 911 if they see a transgender person getting assaulted or harassed... Instead of ignoring
it.

Tell a family member that making fun of transgender people isn’t cool… Instead of laughing along.

Stand up for a student getting bullied for their gender expression… Instead of staying silent.
And so much more.

Standing up and saying “these are people, and I’m not going to let this happen” is vital to moving towards a more peaceful, less violent era for everyone.

Who can observe National Transgender Day of Remembrance?
National Transgender Day of Remembrance is for LGBT individuals and their allies to raise awareness and mourn their community members. What does that mean? Here’s a quick explanation of the terms:

L: Lesbian. People who identify as female, who are romantically attracted to other people who identify as female. This includes transsexual women (transwomen) who are attracted to women or other transwomen.

G: Gay. People who identify as male, who are romantically attracted to other people who identify as male. This includes transsexual men (transmen) who are attracted to men or other transmen.

B: Bisexual. People of any gender who are romantically attracted to various genders. Typically
described as a man or woman who is romantically attracted to both men and women.

T: Transgender. An umbrella term for people who are somehow outside the “gender norm” and
acknowledge it. This can be a masculine woman or a feminine man who embraces their nature; transvestites; Drag Queens and Kings; people who are female in body but feel male in spirit or people who are male in body but feel female in spirit; people who identify as both male and female; people who identify with a third gender; people who reject gender or feel they have no gender, and much more. It CAN also includes people with intersex conditions (XY males, AIS girls, people who are XXY or XXYY, people born with ambiguous genitalia) and transsexuals, people who were born with the anatomy of one sex but likely had a medical issue before birth that caused their brains to be imprinted differently.

Q: Questioning, people who aren’t sure of their sexualit. Also can stand for Queer, people who
identify as neither GLB.

I: Intersex. A term for people who were born with ambiguous genitalia or genetics that aren’t
like the average child (XY males, AIS girls, XXY/XXYY).

A: Asexuals. People who find that they have no physical attraction to people.

Allies: Friends, family and any people who may not be LGBT themselves but are supportive of and compassionate towards those who are LGBT.

And more! This is just a basic list; there are many sexualities, genders and ways of expressing one's identity.

Essentially, anyone of any gender and sexuality can observe National Transgender Day of Remembrance day.

How can people observe this day?
By reading up on transgender rights and issues, learning a bit about transgender people, and
deciding to stand up for this oft-forgotten minority. Some people try and educate at least one
person about transgender issues, some go to official event and vigils, etc. It’s entirely individual.

For those of you who might not take this seriously, or wonder how much of a problem it really is, I’ll let the list of those killed speak for itself.

I got the same thing :/

What also pisses me off is that there's a lot of transphobia among gays. While I certainly hope not to the point of murder, you'd think that gays would be able to empathize.

It's a long, sad list.

Also: Transgender Day of Remembrance

seeksanctuary - I hope you don't mind, I sent a link to this thread to a friend who forgot to arrange a blog post for tdor. He's looking for a guest post so I told him you'd said this could be reposted anywhere. I hope that's OK.

I've had a blogpost scheduled for a week now :P
But I didn't write anything, just a banner and a link to the events.

Yeah, but there are good people out there. Things will get better eventually... they already have started to, if numbers-per-year are a good standard of measure. Under 30, from over 120 the other year? It's an improvement, even if it is terrible.

Humanity can be hateful, but we have to hold onto the good.

You would think, but I have seen far too many people in the GLB area state that the T doesn't belong... it most certainly does belong. In the end, it's all the same fight, and isn't part of the anger towards gays/lesbians about "that's not how a real man or woman is supposed to act"? Well...

That is fine. Thank you for letting me know, and thank you for sharing. I'd love to see his blog...? If it's public that is. I like reading blogs from like-minded (trans-friendly) people.

Hey, that's still helpful. Every little bit is helpful.

That's cool. xD I've... never seen a queer-related blog before, if you can imagine. Been meaning to find ones to read. And it gives me another to link people to, who like that kind of thing.

Thanks for the link!
