    1. English
    2. Mandarin Chinese
    3. German
    4. Japanese
    5. French

English is #1, just because it's widely spoken by lots of professionals worldwide in addition to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc. Mandarin Chinese is #2 because China is going to be a superpower within the next 50 years. German is #3 because Germany is the EU's economic powerhouse. Japanese is #4, just because of its industrialization and new technology. French is #5 because it's widely spoken across Europe, the Middle East, North America, Indochina, and Africa (and it's the "international language").

i would argue, as would many german speakers that i know, that german is among the least important languagea to learn right now. practically everyone speaks english in germany, especially in the business world.

    My list:
    1. English
    2. Mandarin
    3. Spanish
    4. Arabic
    5. French

Hindi may or may not be important--having been a british colony for so long, the number of people who speak english nowadays is really considerable. I used to really want to pursue hindi but several of my indian friends have discouraged me, saying that it would be a waste of time

and of course that's where we have the majority of our call centres, so plenty of english speakers.

Arabic, because it's a highly used language by tonnes and tonnes of people. And especially since i'll one day be joining the army, could come in handy in places such as Iraq.

for starters, as someone said already, 422 billion people speak it. middle eastern countries also essentially control the vast majority of the worlds oil (at least the oil that is easy to extract from the earth). depending on the line of work in which you are interested, it could be of greater or lesser importance. definitely in terms of U.S foreign relations right now, skill in arabic would be a leg up in the political realm.

English is number one because it's the most recognized and widely used language in business, Mandarin Chinese because China is rapidly industrializing and has an ever increasing influence in the worldwide economy, French because it's widely used (just like English) and is often considered the "diplomatic" language, German because Germany is the economic powerhouse of the EU and the EU is now one of the most influencial governing bodies worldwide, and Arabic because it is widely spoken and is the predominat language of oil producing nations.

Agreed. That's why Arabic isn't on my list. The French and Japanese are paving the way . . .
