I'm not sure what I want to give up this year yet. What are you giving up?

I'm not catholic, but if I was it would probably have to be caffeinated drinks.

As I have told everyone who asks me this:

"I gave up air. I lasted 56 seconds."

Why on earth would I want to give something up for a temporary period? Either do it properly or don't do it at all!

I'm not. Because I'm not going to give something up just for the sake of Lent. Too many people just jump on the whole 'giving up things for lent' bandwagon without really understanding or caring what it's about. So, I'm giving up nothing. I may try and do something more productive in my life though, but I've been trying to do that this year anyway.

Having been raised in a Roman Catholic Family, I know what Lent is. It's the Holy Week, starting from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, that commemorates the passing and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is 40 days long, but each of the different denominations have their own different calculation of how long exactly the 40 days are, so each denominational Lent vary in length. But Lent commemorates the 40 days and nights Jesus spent in the desert, avoiding the temptations of Satan, and the holiday itself is the day for penance of the believer, since that's what those who followed Jesus did when he died, before being resurrected...

I'm giving up boys for Lent...Just kidding. I'm not a devout R. Catholic, so I'm not giving up anything...Never did, now I think about.

Even though I'm not longer particularly religious, I still think it's a pretty good challenge to myself to sacrifice something for Lent, especially if it's something that would help me become a better person. That said, I'm not really ambitious when it comes to Lenten sacrifices, it's usually something relatively minor like giving up a bad habit. I think what I'm going to sacrifice is biting my nails. Well, I'll try to at least. xD

I won't give up anything. From my religious viewpoint (I grew up as a Lutheran) I always thought it was unusual for people to give up something as if it could somehow compare to what Jesus suffered for us. It's like, He suffered, died, and went to hell so we don't have to. Our petty "suffering" almost seems like an insult to His sacrifice. He just wants us to be good to one another and He took all the burden for us so we don't have to.

On a related note, I do like the cheap fish sandwiches offered by McDon's and others this time of year.

I grew up in a denomination that stressed personal experience over ritualism, so the giving up of something for Lent has never been a part of my life. I like certain concepts behind it, but I don't find it necessary to participate in.
