Yep... I had some spare time after lunch and decided to check out EC only to discover that it's blocked for "Pornography/Nudity Content".

What the hell?! I have never once seen anything that could even potentially be seen as either of those. I'm extremely tempted to take this to the principal, but he'd probably counter with "Well you shouldn't be using it during class anyway".

It seriously pisses me off though. Any thoughts/comments?

That's ridiculous, I've never seen anything that could even be considered slightly pornographic.

Isn't that kind of stuff banned on EC anyway? Like, it's written in the terms and conditions isn't it? I remember when I was at school I found it ridiculous that certain sites were blocked for what seemed to be no real reason.

Of course there isn't any on this site. Talk to your principal about it, if you can.

I also want to check this now! That's ridiculous! My former role playing forum was more rated R than this!

Blocking LGBT friendly websites like this is actually illegal and unconstitutional for schools to do. If you can demonstrate that similar sites are blocked you should definitely contact the ACLU. You should e-mail them or call someone. I can guarantee that they'll threaten the school system with legal action. They do it all the time.

School filters are messed up. I've been able to watch trailers for "A Serbian Film" and yet not be able to research Pascal's triangle because of 'pornography'. A lot of sites with "gay" in them are likely to be offensive / hateful or pornographic, so there'd be a blanket ban. It wouldn't be a manual block so I wouldn't worry about it.

It's probable that it's a sloppy block on the part of whomever is providing the Internet filtering for your school. (Most schools subscribe to a service to block these things.) Or perhaps there are certain words that the site-blocker has identified, such as "sex" or "masturbation" or "blowjob" or something -- which, obviously, we do have legitimate discussions about -- that's triggering the filtering. Or it's possible that somebody making the filtering decisions is a bigot.

In any case, I would be happy to send an email, make a call, or whatever to your principal to try and get the block lifted. If that doesn't work, then a nastygram from ACLU would probably do the trick, but I think it's better to play nice first

Well, to be fair, it'll probably just be changed from being blocked for being pornographic to being blocked because it's a chat room. Not be the lame one here, but chat sites are usually blocked for a reason at school.

Although this does not affect me in any way,i consider banning ec in any school to be way over the top and to the point of being dangerous.Anyone of school age who is going through what most lgbt people go through need access to such sites for guidance and help.

Whoever makes decisions to ban such sites need to realise that until a young person is able to come out it is not always practical to access these type of sites from home computers for fear of being found out.Cant these people see why there is such a high rate of suicide among lgbt youth when they are even denied help online.

I certainly think that chip has the right idea with a call to the principle. If a simple approach doesnt work, take it further. After all you do not have to join ec to have a look and see for yourself that the content of the site is in no way porn or sex. This site has helped many people including myself and should be available to anyone who needs it.

    I wouldn't be surprised.

I think my school internet has blocked at least 80% of the internet. And that's probably only a slight exaggeration.

I remember one time my school's own website was blocked. That was pretty hilarious, because it shows that the kids failing in their classes are smarter than whoever disgned the filtering system.

Oddly enough, it was blocked on account of it being host to pirated software.

In a hint of irony, our auto-detection software blocked the above post and threw it into the moderation queue for some reason. I find that pretty funny
