Default Most heartbreaking thing I've read in a long time

SL Letter of the Day: Show This Woman Some Love | Slog

Quote:
I got a call from my oldest sister last month. I wasn't sure what she was going to tell me—had one of my parents died? was I going to be let back into the family?—and then she told me that she needed my help. Her son was gay and she needed me to come and get him. I didn't understand what she meant at first. I thought she wanted me to come and talk to him. But, no, she meant come and get him. She didn't want that "filth"—her own son—in her home. When I picked him up a large part of my family was there, and I swear to God I had never felt so much hate in my life. I don't understand it and I know I never will, but I swear it broke me.

The action is beyond awful - but, thankfully, the outcome is likely to the best for the kid concerned.

Oh Wow that is just terrible .. especially the "She didn't want that "filth"—her own son—in her home" comment .. just -wow- to consider your own son as "filth" .....

Such a horrible thing to happen to that kid but the silver-lining, his aunt, is so amazingly beautiful I cant help but think of this as an uplifting story.

& this is why I like Dan Savage, he can come off as a total tool sometimes but once you look past his "act" hes an awesome person.

Real families don't throw out their children like yesterday's moldy garbage just because they're not straight.

He now knows what it's like to have a real family--one whose love is not conditional on him being straight--instead of the poor excuses for human beings he and his aunt call their biological relatives.

I hope that, with his wonderful aunt and new extended family, he grows up to be a happy, successful man. If ever his relatives come crawling back to him to beg forgiveness, I hope he tells them they're filth not worthy of licking dog poop from his shoes.

I don't understand how someone could just cast away their son like that... That was truly heartbreaking to read.

Wow, that really is heartbreaking. It's hard to believe a family could just disown someone like that. Thank goodness for the aunt though, the kids probably going to be better off with her.

I don't understand how you could just not want one of your children anymore.

While we don't know the age of the child, I just don't understand in anyway, whether 8 or 18 and coming out, he's your son for heaven's sake...how can "I am gay" turn a son to a stranger. Honestly to this day it still boggles my mind beyond reason.

Horrible family! Good job his aunt was there at least! I'd hate to think what would have happened if he didn't have anyone.

This reminds me of a video I saw some one. This guy comes home and comes out to his family. It dosen't go well at first, but they eventually are ok with it, but don't tell grandma.

Grandma later finds a book about coming out and confronts the guy. She says this is disgusting, it says that some people stop loving their kids.

That is the truth. The only thing disgusting about being gay is that some people stop living their loved ones.
