Where do you stand on other controversial issues?

Well, I'm guessing most people on the site are for Marriage Equality, but I'm just curious as to whether or not your beliefs line up fully with the rest of the Democratic beliefs, or if you have some different views. So, are you for or against the following issues.

    Abortion?
    Death Penalty?
    No fault divorce?
    Stem Cell Research?
    Pornography?
    Affirmative Action?
    Medical Marijuana?
    Marijuana legalization?
    Gun Control?
Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)?
    Obamacare?

Just curious to see where everyone else falls. These were all the controversial issues that I could think of off the top of my head. I still probably missed a few, but I don't think I missed anything major.

Just a reminder: It is acceptable to discuss and debate politics on EC. It is not acceptable to attack other members for their political beliefs. IOW "that idea is bad" is OK but "that idea is bad and you're a bad/stupid/evil person for holding it" is not. In general, please try to observe Jay Smoov's recommendation of focusing on what people say and not what they are.

As one of the few (only?) moderate Republicans on this site, I will answer the ones that I care about/know enough about to have an opinion.

Abortion? Pro-life, except for rape or the mother's life is in danger.
    Death Penalty? In favor.
    No fault divorce? Don't care.
Stem Cell Research? On the fence.
    Pornography? Not a big deal.
    Medical Marijuana? Not in favor.
    Marijuana legalization? Not in favor.
    Gun Control? Semi-control.
Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)? Non-issue, even though I'm not very religious.
    Obamacare? Hate it.

I will also add one: global warming - and I think it's a real issue.

    I'll answer the ones I understand... :K

    Abortion?
    - Go for it.

    Death Penalty?
    - Go for it.

    No fault divorce?
    - If neither people are feelin' it, then there isn't a point in continuing... Go for it.

    Pornography?
    - Go for it.

    Medical Marijuana?
    - Go for it.

    Marijuana legalization?
    - Only in the privacy of someones home. If I had to walk past people smokin' up all the time I'd probably vomit...

    Gun Control?
    - Ehhh, I'm good with the current law regarding guns...

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)?
    - What?

    Obamacare?
    - I'm fine with the health care I have in Canada, thanks.

Abortion? Pro-Choice. The government should have NO say what a Woman does with her body.
    Death Penalty? Against.
    No fault divorce? No view
    Stem Cell Research? For.
Pornography? For. Is this really a controversial issue?
    Medical Marijuana? For.
    Marijuana legalization? For.
    Gun Control? Ban all guns.
Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)? Against. There are very few countries that have one national religion, as such it should not be on currency.
Obamacare? About time, americans! Welcome to the new world. (Canadian, grew up with medicare.)

I'm not an American, but these things do have relevance elsewhere in the world too, so I'll provide my views in one sentence.

    Abortion?

    I am pro-choice.

    Death Penalty?

I am against. It has no significant effects on the rate of crime or recidivism, does nothing to alleviate social pressures causing crime, is often used as a political tool in nations which have it and is a violation of the right to life.

    No fault divorce?

    No definitive position.

    Stem Cell Research?

I am very much for it.

    Pornography?

I think it should be heavily regulated (e.g. for safety and worker protection), but there is no reason to ban it.

    Affirmative Action?

I am in favour of a certain amount of affirmative action, yes.

    Medical Marijuana?

I haven't read the literature on it; if the literature supports it as an effective treatment, then sure. If not, then no.

    Marijuana legalization?

Decriminalisation for sure. Legalisation of use and small scale production, but not large scale production.

    Gun Control?

Yes. Specifically, a registry, a licensing system, limitations on the conditions under which certain people (such as minors) can buy and use them, and limitations on where they can be carried.

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)?

Absolutely not. The state has no business in granting one particular religious denomination privileges over any other.

    Obamacare?

Nationalised health care has been shown time and again to be a fundamentally good idea.

On the subject of abortion, I'll just point out that many of the policies proposed by pro-lifers are far more consistent with wanting to women to face consequences for having sex than wanting to prevent abortions.

    I am:
    Pro-choice
    Anti-death penalty
    Pro-no fault divorce
    Pro-stem cell research
Pro-pornography (provided the performers are of legal age and give consent, of course)
    Pro-affirmative action
    Pro-medical marijuana
    Anti-marijuana legalization
    Pro-gun control
    Pro-secular currency
Obamacare isn't applicable to me, but I'm pro-socialized healthcare.

Some of them don't strike me as particularly controversial, like no fault divorce, but meh. I'm mostly in line with the Liberal Party here in Canada. And even though I pretty much rang all those off with my first thought on the issue, that isn't to say that I don't think there's any grey area. I'm more neutral on the issue of marijuana legalization than opposed to it, but if it came down to a referendum, I'd vote nay.

I should also add that my pro-choice stance is a bit misleading. I believe women need the right to make that decision, and they need to be able to safely have an abortion with clean tools, and the assistance of professionals, but it's not a decision I would ever want to make.

As I mentioned, there are a lot of grey areas in a lot of those questions.

And just one more thing to add: the subject of assisted suicide/euthanasia has reared its head once again in Canada, so that could definitely be something to discuss.

    Abortion: Pro Choice
    Death Penalty: Against
    No fault divorce: Neutral
Stem Cell Research: It has my full support.
Pornography: As long as nobody is harmed and children are not exploited it is fine.
Affirmative Action: Underrepresented groups should get aid.
    Medical Marijuana: Absolutely not.
    Marijuana legalization: Absolutely not.
Gun Control: I'm fine with the current laws in mass. Taking away all the guns would then mean that only the lawbreakers had them. So having them strictly regulated but present is best in my opinion.
Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge): Neutral, so long as peoples of other faiths or of no faith are not discriminated or persecuted.
    Obamacare: Greatly in favour.

I would like to answer, but I need to know one thing first: what is the definition of no fault divorce?

No-fault divorce is a divorce in which the dissolution of a marriage does not require a showing of wrong-doing by either party. Laws providing for no-fault divorce allow a family court or other court to grant a divorce in response to a petition by either party to the marriage, without requiring the petitioner to provide evidence that the respondent has committed a breach of the marital contract. Laws providing for no-fault divorce also often limit the potential legal defenses of a respondent who would prefer to remain married.

    From wikipedia.

Abortion?: Pro-Choice. I don't agree with abortion except in certain circumstances but I believe it should be an optional choice. I'm not going to judge someone who has an abortion.

Death Penalty?: Don't agree with it.

No fault divorce?: Fine with me.

Stem Cell Research?: Sure, why not.

Pornography?: It should be legal. I see no problem with it.

Affirmative Action?: It's important to have AA.

Medical Marijuana?: It's okay with me.

Marijuana legalization?: I'm not sure. It could lower prison populations.

    Gun Control?: Some regulation.

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge: No.

Obamacare?: I need to read up on it more.

Divorce where no party must be shown to have done something wrong in order for the divorce to be granted by the court. In fault divorce the party petitioning the divorce must show that the other party committed some injury (wrong-doing or harm, financial, physical, emotional or otherwise). It reduces the role of the state in divorce to resolving conflict and dividing property.

Well, I was just looking at the family research council website :eusa_doh: (it made laugh) and I saw that they were against no fault divorce and wanted to get rid of it, so that's why I added that.

I think the assisted suicide/euthanasia is also a good one to have. I'm not really sure where I would stand on that though, I'd have to think about it.

In terms of politics, I think Canada's a futuristic version of the US (or made a role model type of thing). They got marriage equality in '05 and universal health care a while ago. Maybe when we finish dealing with issues in the US like gay marriage we'll move on to talking about assisted suicide as well.

    Abortion?: Pro-choice

    Death Penalty?: against

No fault divorce?: Fine with me. I don't think there should be a stigma against divorce. Yes it's a sad thing to go through, and it's hard on children if you have them, but if two people just don't love each other anymore, or realize it was a mistake I see no reason to trap them in a union together.

    Stem Cell Research?: For it

Pornography?: Legal, but with mandatory condom usage.

Affirmative Action?: I don't like the way it is now. I know extremely wealth black people who have in no way faced obstacles or been discriminated against. Gays are discriminated against more, but that would be messy to create AA for that. I think it should be done by family economic status, so that way children who actually come from a disadvantaged background could get help.

    Medical Marijuana?: For it.

    Marijuana legalization?: For it.

Gun Control?: A lot of regulation. I see no reason people need to be carrying a gun in some suburban area.

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge): Should be taken off.

    Obamacare?: For.

By the way, for those who don't live in the US, when I say religious language I'm referring to how to pledge of allegiance which we are taught in school and say every day has "under god" in is, and how our currency all says "in god we trust".

Abortion? Pro-choice. I don't necessarily agree with it, but it's not my place to decide what a woman does in her situation.

Death Penalty? I've never really decided where I stand on this one...

No fault divorce? Not particularly controversial IMO, so I don't have much of an opinion on it.

Stem Cell Research? Can't say I know that much about it to be honest. :/

Pornography? In what context? Actors, viewers, age, availability, etc.? I don't think there's an issue with it, generally speaking. All things in moderation.

Affirmative Action? Hiring people under specific demographics to meet "quota", correct? If so, then I'm against it. People should be hired because they are best qualified.

Medical Marijuana? If it helps people, sure. Under control of course.

Marijuana legalization? ...I have never and still don't see the need for this.

Gun Control? I've ranted a ton about this in that one thread a while back, but in short, no, guns should definitely be under control. If I had it my way they wouldn't be available besides specific uses (hunting, law enforcement, etc.). There is no reason to have them otherwise, and I stand by that. I don't care how much danger you're in, drawing a gun is just going to escalate a situation.

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)? Could someone elaborate on this one?

Obamacare? This one as well, since I'm not American and don't care enough to follow politics. :/

Well... I answered most of them. Seems I know less about current issues than I thought. :/

    Abortion?
-- By all means, do it. Maybe I'm just too pessimistic, but I think it's better for the baby not to be born into this world. There's just too much pain, so why would anyone want to subject more people to it. A baby isn't a person until it's born anyways.

    Death Penalty?
-- Absolutely, but only when the person is undeniably guilty with hard evidence. Stop wasting people's hard earned money to care for guilty criminals. We should be spending money on education and other more important things.

    No fault divorce?
-- Go ahead. If two people don't want to be together, they should have a right to get out. There's no use forcing a relationship.

    Stem Cell Research?
-- Yes. Medical advancements are always good.

    Pornography?
-- It's your own business. Do as you please.

    Affirmative Action?
    -- Yes.

    Medical Marijuana?
    -- I don't care.

    Marijuana legalization?
-- Sure, why not. You can never eliminate drugs, and putting druggies in jail is just a waste of space and resources. There's too many of them.

    Gun Control?
-- Everyone should be allowed to own a gun!

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)?
    -- Don't care.

    Obamacare?
-- Don't know anything about it. Don't follow politics.

Abortion? Legal for any reason during first and second trimesters, legal for health concerns in third trimester or if serious birth defect (i.e. child likely to die within a few months anyways) is discovered

Death Penalty? Never permissible. It is not effective as a deterrent, and it is irreversible, which is particularly damning considering the other problems in the US justice system.

    No fault divorce? Perfectly acceptable

Stem Cell Research? No problems with it, regardless of the source of the cells.

Pornography? The production should be more strictly regulated, but otherwise it ought to be legal.

Affirmative Action? Necessary. Perhaps one day it won't be, but now it's one of the few reasonably effective weapons the government has in combating systematic sexism, racism, ableism, etc.

Medical Marijuana? It's been shown to have legitimate medical uses, so it makes sense to use it in those instances.

Marijuana legalization? Should be legal, but tightly regulated.

Gun Control? I don't know if it is possible to completely eliminate the private possession of fire arms, since making things illegal has a tendency to drive them underground, but it should be tightly regulated.

Religious language used for nation purpose (on currency, in the pledge)? Completely unacceptable. Even the most non-denominational statements still favor certain world views (in the case of the US, monotheism with a god willing to intervene in human affairs), creating a climate in which people who believe in others are excluded.

Obamacare? I would have preferred a single-payer system or something along the lines of what France or Germany has, but it's better than what we had before. The mandate isn't great, but was probably necessary to keep the insurance companies from turning against it completely.
