Zimbabwe's government just started to issue 10 million dollar bills in order to ease the critical shortage of cash in the country. Ridiculous huh? A single beer in Zimbabwe can cost between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars these days. No country's government has ever survived inflation like this, so Zimbabwe really has to get its act together. Pic1: the new 10,000,000 dollar bill Pic2: the amount of money someone saved to buy a domestic beer about one month ago in zimbabwe
The brand of beer in that picture is 'Castle Larger' I saw loads of bottles of that in South Africa But seriously.... how much longer is this going to last for o.0 Im interested in seeing how it ends...
At home we have a 1million kroner bill from WW2 when the inflation in Norway was huge! It's sad to think that this is going on in a country today though
you're from norway? i have an exchange student living with me for the year and she's from just outside oslo
The depressing thing is that before President Mugabe took power and ruled through corruption and fear and before he kicked out all the white settlers (who knew how to run the country), Zimbabwe used to be the wealthiest country in Africa it used to be the "Breadbasket of Africa" and now due to stupidity and ignorance its one of the poorest. Apparently a roll of toothpast costs around 10 million Zimbabwe dollars (according to a South African friend of mine)
mine's name is rosa, and she is actually chinese by descent which is really interesting. she speaks norwegian, swedish, mandarin, english and danish fluently
She does sound amazing, but when you know Norwegian you basically get Swedish and Danish for free. Still mandarin in addition is impressive!
This is like when after the Civil War people would wallpaper their houses with confederate money. All the money was so useless. Also Germany after the fall of the Nazi regime. Loaves of bread cost hundreds of thousands one hour, then the next hour they were up into the millions.
It's just like post WWI Germany. I was just reading about their crazy inflation, it was quite hysterical. It went something like this: 1914: 4.3 marks to the US dollar, 1919: 8.2 marks to the dollar, 11/1/1923: 130 billion marks to the dollar, 11/30/1923: 4.2 trillion marks to the dollar. It's so ridiculous I can't stand it. Who knew inflation was so much fun?
When you put yourself in their place, it's quite scary. Imagine spending your life savings on food, and after two weeks to a month going broke. All of this due to his stupidness (not to mention selfishness) Robert Mugabe, at least to some extent. A while ago, I remember hearing that he spent $60,000 (USD) on his own birthday party. This, in a country where people are starving.. Shameful.
