    It's cheaper, not necessarily better.

I do support universal health care because I believe in preventive medicine, though. A two-track system of universal and private would be a good mix of cheap prices and effectiveness.

Sicko is only one point of view. I am sure that the political prisoners in Cuba who have been arrested, tortured, imprisoned and executed would differ with you. The US is not perfect, but it is one of the few places in the world where someone can make a movie like Sicko and not fear reprisals from the government. It is the freedoms that we enjoy in this country that make it great. The US is not perfect, but I would not trade it for anywhere else.

well, the US does not have a monopoly on freedom. In most other western democratic countries, you're going to find the same freedoms.

I've got to say, after breaking so many bones in my life, I think both I and my parents would agree.

but it's run by the US government!!!! where it is physically located is irrelevant... if gordon brown set up auchwitz in france, it would still be a british problem....

You are absolutely right; the US is only one example of a western democracy. My point is that there is a significant difference between a western democracy and a country like Cuba. The US is not perfect, as the current Guantanamo Bay debate proves, but it is still vastly different from a totalitarian regime where anyone who participated in making a movie like Sicko would be arrested and jailed.

Sweetie, Cuba? Those peole live in complete squalor. When they can even get an appointment, it isn't that great. France and UK have socialized medicine....it's only alright.

Not like it doesn't happen in the US! Muslim immigrants have been unlawfully detained, tortured, and killed, suspected of being "terrorists". The US is far from perfect.
