Nahhh...I'm pretty sure it's the same founding fathers whose "faith" he said made America strong. :rolle:
His summary of secular humanist opinions is really stupid. We don't believe that the religious should stay out of the public arena. We believe that beliefs about public policy not grounded in direct, observable data and justification independent of religion belong out of politics. There's really a rather large difference.
He's basically the result of Texas effectively being a single-party state. He didn't really do anything to get where he did. He played the Republican Party system until he inherited the governorship. He is FAR from representative of the 25 million Texans.
How does this idiot keep getting elected down there? Even in 2010 he was re-elected by a large margin.
For exactly the reasons that FJ Cruiser stated. Texas is effectively a 1 party state and Rick Perry is very good at playing the system. Pretty much the same way Richard Daley keeps getting reelected as the mayor of Chicago, or any other number of politicians stay in office. If you look at most career politicians, they don't stay in office because of their performance, they stay in office because they can play the system.
It's because he's Republican. Anyone with an (R) beside their name will get elected over a Democrat, no matter how terrible they are. You could write pages upon pages as to why Texas has been heavily Republican, but it's just a fact of life. As a result, who gets into power is largely determined by inter-party politics, which the public has little control of. In the 2010 election, voters bought into his campaign that his policies were the reason Texas has escaped much of the recession, despite the fact that it's our dominant industries that are responsible for that. I proudly voted for Bill White. Honestly, the state-level politics is one of the more frustrating things about living in this state. It's mind-boggling how disconnected the politicians and public are from each other.
