For those who don't know, James Baldwin was a gay black author born in the 1920s who wrote many novels, essays, and plays throughout his life. Most of his novels are about racial issues, and some are about issues of sexual identity. Giovanni's Room is about an American expatriate living in Paris struggling with his sexual identity. The thing about this book, though, is that it's not just some fluffy fun gay romance novel. It's heavy, beautiful literature. I truly think Baldwin's writing is the most beautiful prose I've ever read.

It's not a very long book. I strongly recommend it to anyone. Whether you're gay or not, it's a beautiful read.
