Americans make up about 5% of the world's population. They grow and kill nearly 10,000,000,000 animals a year, more than 15% of the world's total.

30% of the earth's ice-free land is involved in livestock production.,generating 20% of the world's greenhouse gases- more than transportation.

rethinking the meat-guzzler new york times Seems to work but not the above www thing.Again my computer failings rise to the surface and I can't erase that which doesn't work.Whew!

I cut my meat consumption by over 70%.

I eat veg at least 5 times a week. Leaving only two days for meat consumption. Even when i do eat meat, it's usually salmon. I actually prefer not eating meat, i don't like the taste of it or the way it messes with my digestion.
Soy just tastes better to me.
But sometimes i get lazy and just eat whatever the family has on for those 2 days, which is usually meat.

While occasionally I have a really strong craving for something really meaty, usually the only animal products that go into my body are dairy related. Can't say that meat has any negative affects on my GI though.

I'm not trying to be mean, but why do Canadians feel like it's appropriate to start a thread like this that's obviously negative towards America? Why not make a thread about Canada's meat production? And there was no mention about the fact that a large portion of the meat America produces is exported. Look at the US Meat Export Federation's website:

    http://www.usmef.org/AboutUs/FAQs.asp

Edit: Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see export numbers

I consider myself an American as far as these stats go.Notice it said Americans and not U.S. residents. This post was not meant to disrespect citizens of the USA but only for anyone to become aware of the repercussions of the infatuation of the Western World with meat.If any offense was taken I humbly apologize.Your fellow American..Richard

The reason I didn't make a post about Canada's production was because it wasn't in todays New York Times.

Also I notice that your source is a PR blurb from the Federations publicity dep't.

What? I'm confused. Why do you consider yourself an America? The USMEF is from the United States, and it represents meat producers in the United States.

I also don't really know why it matters where the numbers come from as long as they're valid. Does it matter it's from a "public relations" page?

    That is a bit sexual...

    I personally love meat.

    Meat=nummy!

I mean I can go without meat and not notice/care but I won't choose to stay away.

Funny thing is at first I thought you were going to do some animal rights activist thing. (Those people are funny. Cute and funny.)

My view is that our ancestors didn't spend 3 million years clawing their way to the top of the food chain for us to not eat meat.

I think this is just one example of North America's disproportional consumption of resources. The article comes from a US paper, but it is certainly reflective of Canadian consumption trends as well. Buying patterns aren't quite the same here, but they are much the same...

Americans are gluttonous and wasteful so this doesn't surprise me.

I'm no vegetarian, but I'm as close as you get without making an effort. I eat Satays with my occasional curry. I have a very rare bacon sandwich, maybe one every other weekend. Much more rare, I'll have a sausage and chips from my chippy. That's about it. I eat very little meat. I eat very little meat, very rarely, in fact.

If I didn't eat so much cheese, I'd weigh nothing.

  17. Just like a few others who posted, I'm a vegetarian, too.

    Intersting facts, though...

    Haha! Very well put!:eusa_clap

But yeah, I personally try to balance my meat and veggies out as much as possible. I have a lot of sandwiches, so I end up consuming more bread, lettuce, and cheese than the meager thin slice of turkey I put in there.

Thing is, my family are Pakis, so "goshth masala" is all they know how to make...

Also noticed that about half the posters are vegetarians, and people do say that all gays are vegs.

    Another half-true stereotype?
