To be honest, I see no point in having the government being this involved with marriage. There are some privileges that I believe married couples should receive, like being able to visit each other in the hospital, etc, but tax cuts? That, I don't understand. I think the government should stay completely out of marriage, let it be a ceremony, or an arbitrary title, but don't give married couples special privileges. To deal with issues such as hospital visitations (and all the other issues that would come along with this), they could make a special category, in which you could add anyone you want. This would solve issues such as marriage equality, but also, it would help unmarried couples in long term relationships, and could also be applied to those in polyamorous relationships. Overall, I think marriage just needs to be completely redefined.
Oh yea, this is 100% hypothetical. I don't even see this as something to be considered for 20+ years.
It'd be nice.. but problematic, as every government should stay out of marriage then. I know couples who had to marry, because one of them moved to the US for work, but the other could only follow when they were married :/ So although it would be hard to archieve I would like this and these things too: 'Government should stay out of religion' 'Religion should stay out of marriage' : ) Edit: 'Religion should stay out of government' would be awesome too
I voted yes, although I believe in marriage equality as a temporary solution. Others feel as you do, and have even made a manifesto about it.
