Dear PETA: Shut the Fuck Up

Okay, so I had always heard that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are kind of wacked out, but I had no idea until I saw "Boyfriend Went Vegan." It shows a woman looking seriously battered, and she's in a neck brace. She goes back to her apartment and shares a pleasant, domestic moment with her boyfriend. It is implied that she got to be this way because he fucks her that hard, and he's only strong enough to do that because he's vegan. It's pretty horrifying that they imagine men want to do sexual violence so that they try to then eroticize it, and sell it to me as a way of advancing animal rights.

I hope that they go bankrupt so that their "employees" can find productive work.

We vegans and vegetarians feel the same way about PETA that Christians do about Fred Phelps.

It's kind of cute. Like watching a little kid try to do things the "grown-up" way.

On an unrelated note, what's with the pink text, Pret Allez? Just because carpe diem?

This. I've not directly experienced PETA, not having been to the US, but I think there are much better ways of campaigning for animal rights.

I've mixed feelings on PETA. I sympathise with their cause, but i think they let themselves down by being too over the top in promoting it.

How do you feel about Sea Shepherd?

Many, many years ago, probably 1983 or so, PETA, consisted of 4 people: The founders, Alex Pacheco and Ingrid Newkirk, some IT guy, and one other person. They bought a very expensive computer system from my small company, about $18,000 at the time. They used it for 3 or 4 weeks, long enough to send out some huge mailing, then refused to pay for it, or to give it back to us. We had to get an attorney to get the equipment back, which we then couldn't sell as new. But they kept and paid for the printer... they claimed, because they liked it, but actually, because it was obvious they'd printed tens of thousands of pages.

Oh, and Alex Pacheco did some sort of shady underhanded stuff, getting a job at NIH to "expose" some (to him) horrible injustice they were doing to their (apparently very well treated) test animals.

Ever since then, I've seen them for what they are: underhanded, shady, evil people. Ingrid Newkirk is still the exec. director of the organization. If I ever saw her in person, I'd remind her of the shady shit they did back then.

Wow, that's a very interesting personal story that you have, Chip. I'm not surprised at all. Publicly hyper-ethical busybodies have been known to fail at demonstrating a moral center in everyday life. I'm just horrified that they would make light of sexual violence, fascism, and other heavy subjects in the furtherance of, in my view, something that they have only a quantum hope in affecting.

You know you are too analytical, when you are more upset that the concept of gaining extra strength through veganism is vastly biologically inaccurate..... than the fact that the women was battered.......

Lol, either way, I was well aware that they are dreadful people.

Ummm... Real? I was way more concerned by the implied sexual violence... You should know that about me from my posting history.

there are two kinds of vegans. the social "oh, you eat meat, well I wont presure you to change, as I will respect your choices as long as you are willing to respect mine, and thats all that matters", and the pricks.
