Full story here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7241460.stm So the government think people in school need five hours of culture a week but only one hour of cookery. What's more important for your future, knowing more about opera and ballet, or being able to feed yourself? :bang:
Opera and ballet! Generally useless, but awesome to do anyway People's parents should be teaching them to cook, not their schoolteacher.
If they get good enough with opera and ballet, they can be rich and have other people cook for them! But wait, who'll teach the other people to cook if everyone's doing ballet and opera?! *brain explodes*
Any form of the arts aren't about surface level things. Sure, it's just "opera" or just "ballet", but the arts find a way to release something within us that we can't explain. They help us get in touch with ourselves and with others on a deeper level, so I wouldn't just dismiss them...
I think an education on an arts and culture topic (not just ballet and opera but music, painting, sculpture, literature, theatre, History etc.) is beneficial whereas a cooking lesson should be only elective or learnt at home and although it is important to learn how to feed yourself, unless you're planning on a career in hospitality it should not be counted as an essential topic.
