I heard about that. I just have 3 points. 1) Americans have always been allowed to travel to Cuba. We just can't spend a single penny there so there's no point in going. 2) Fidel might not step down entirely. 3) The US should just stop "bringing the blessings of freedom" everywhere and let the countries figure it out themselves in their own time. Saves our money and reputation.
I've never looked into Cuba specifically, so I can't comment on weather communism was good or bad in it. I take it Cuba's leader was a dictator and other political parties were banned?
i heard of that~ but i didnt know he was that old o: my spanish teacher told us that you could only go there if it was for like a news broadcast or if you wanted to go to a school there. :/ i guess she was on crack when she told us that.
Um, that's false. Raul would never release Cuba from communism, and he especially wouldn't do it while Fidel was still alive. Cuba needs to be free but Raul isn't going to do it, sorry.
Hm, I doubt we'll be seeing an end to Cuban communism with the ascent of Raoul. But, with Castro out of the picture, perhaps there's a chance of seeing the embargo finally lifted. I still can't believe that it's still in effect.
What we musn't forget is that since the revolution in 1959 that brought Castro to power and removed the corrupt, US backed government of Batista, cuba has been under popular communist leadership and there appears to be absolutely no chance that Fidel Castro's successors would adopt any form of western-style government nor is there any large support in Cuba for such a change. It appears that despite some false hopes, the Cuban embargo is there to stay in the US...
besides, it's the US government's trade embargo between them and cuba that means you can't buy stuff there. [i think]. because british people can go with no problems. and communism hasn't been all bad for cuba. compared to other south american countries it has an excellent level of equality, high life expectancy etc.
Cuba is actually really nice. I went there on vacation and it was quite memorable. Plus nothing like a cuban cigar, eh? haha! Actually it feels kinda good to go to a place where no Americans are willing to go (just for the fact that WE could be there,haha!). There was Polish people, Russian people (...Who got my brother WAY to drunk), hell even some Canadians (and I'm not talking about us) at the resort we were at. But no Americans. And the whole time we just stood at the edge of Cuba and point to the states and LAUGHED while drinking Pina Coladas and Mai Tai's. Well no not really. But they really don't like Americans lol.
i can't think of a system that one could call 'good communism'. The idea is usually to investigate, restrict and subordinate the citizens to a single person that governs the whole country. Just look at North Korea, or USSR. Communism in Poland was down 3 years before I was born, but still... one of it's most stupid ideas was the food rationing system (just like during the Greman occupation during WWII). Everybody who went to work was given coupons, eg. "beef, 0,3 kg" or "sugar, 0,5 kg", and if you had the money, you could get yourself those. Of course it was on rare occasions that some meat was actually in shops, so once it was made available, the queues were usually 500 meters long, and people at the end of the line didn't know what they were waiting for, but they stood patiently because it musthave been some luxury goods. Oranges, bananas were there like twice a year. So yeah... :icon_conf
Yeah... not seeing going to Cuba as a positive thing. I'm pretty content here. lol As for their political situation... Whatever works for them.
