You know, I love a good political debate as much as the next person, but why does everyone take so personal that someone else doesn't share the exact same view as them?
Yeah, that's just the way it is for a lot of people when debating politics. I've learned that quickly being a political science minor.
Because politics is other people discussing their plans to oppress me, and I have no intention whatsoever of being nice about it.
Cuz people want everyone to think like them and if you don't they get defensive and start flipping out and all the while you are wondering why you even talk to this person. This was sort of my life for the week leading up to the election. ha
The thing is, politics IS personal. Any political issue that's worth talking about has to be worth talking about because it affects us or, at the very least, someone we know. If it doesn't affect us or someone we know, then there's no point in talking about it, so any political issue that gets discussed is going to be personal for those discussing it.
I only really get offended when it's something that affects the core of my being like them saying that gays don't deserve to get married...that should not even be a political debate.
Well from personal experience, I don't understand why some people voted for Romney for example, especially women, as he's so anti-feminist. So I get sort of offended when they agree with his misogynistic views about women, it's pretty degrading.
Being someone who will likely major in political science, this sort of thought comes across my mind a lot. People take politics personally because, as lots of people have already pointed out, politics is a part of life. I have friends who do not share the same political views as me, and that makes it that much more interesting to discuss politics with them. I think part of the problem in so many democracies today is that politics is becoming too polarized because people are irrationally following one party. I am part of a political party myself, but I recognize that if my own party was to do a number of things I disagree with, I wouldn't hesitate to re-assess my membership. I think if more people were to bring rational, level-headed, fact-checked, and well-built arguments to the table then we'd all benefit. Of course, most people won't do that since it takes time and thinking to do such things.
Pretty much the reason as what everybody has said above. I personally take my political views pretty seriously, but that's only because I don't want a party in power which would create laws for this country which discriminate against myself simply for my sexual orientation.
