My mom lived in Argentina for 4 years after she graduated college and did a lot of traveling throughout South America. Anyway, this was back in the late 70s, and she was Island hopping off the coast of Brazil. She went to this one island and was shocked because it was filled with openly gay couples who lived together and such, and when she asked the straight couples on the island about it, they were 100% unfazed about the gay couples. Its a really strange situation because it was the 1970s first of all, and in Brazil, which is a very catholic nation---but for some reason this island was relatively isolated from traditional Brazilian culture and gay and straight couples were able to coexist without any discrimination or conflict. It really was an incredible microcosm, I am unsure whether it remains somewhere.
We had an anthropoligist come speak at my PFLAG chapter and told us about different places in the world just like this. In one place, the only time the males and females got together was to make a baby. At other times, they had sexual relations with people of their own gender.
as great as that place sounds, i don't think they got fashion malls and catour runways so i wouldn't have a job. not my dream placve at all. but i do agree about the vacation....sounds like a good getaway.
