Who Do Exclusive Bottoms Exist?

Why in the gay world are there exclusive tops and exclusive bottoms?

I know to some, this seems like a stupid question. But I have been unsuccessful finding a satisfactory answer online.

One survey I found while researching this topic indicated that bottoms are statistically more likely than tops to be attracted to older men, more likely to be attracted to taller men, more likely to be attracted to hairy men. Tops are more likely than bottoms to be attracted to more feminine qualities (i.e. youth, hairlessness, smaller body build). Perhaps more interestingly, for each category surveyed, the results essentially fell in a linear fashion for tops, vers/tops, versatiles, vers/bottoms, bottoms.

Now, obviously, human sexuality is a very complicated subject, so I could be dead wrong, but these results indicate to me that we exist on a spectrum of homosexuality. In order, you have your straight guys, then your straight guys who enjoy sex with other men (MSM), then your bisexual guys, then your tops, then your versatiles, then your bottoms, then your guys who feel they should have been born as women.

Another study found that tops are much more likely to be the insertive partner in any sexual activity, not just anal sex, meaning that they are more likely than bottoms to receive oral sex, hand jobs, etc., than they are to give them.

As a versatile gay, I personally do not feel satisfied unless I both give and receive in a relationship. Both aspects are important to me. Exclusive tops who refuse to give oral or get their partner off have always come off as supremely selfish to me, and exclusive bottoms who derive 100% of their pleasure from feeling needed by their partner and giving their partner pleasure just seem, well, foreign and bizarre to me.

Could it be that tops are not really selfish, but are simply closer to being straight than bottoms, hence tops' preference of butts over penises and some tops' altogether aversion to the penis? Could it be that exclusive bottoms are not really bizarre, selfless beings, but rather closer to being transgendered than tops, hence their aversion to using their penises for insertive sex?

Obviously, if there does exist such a spectrum of homosexuality, there are many exceptions. I do not deny that, but do you agree or disagree that such a spectrum exists?

The psychology of the top/bottom relationship is fascinating to me. Why are bottoms so likely to be submissive and willing to please? What drives so many bottoms' desire to be dominated by a top?

Insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

i think it has a lot to do with domiance.
i'm not a gay male so i wouldnt know, though.
i mean, i'm pretty submissive, even just in cuddling and what not. i like to be spooned more than be the spooner. i also like more masculine features (hairy, older, or just dominant)

  3. Yes, I believe in a spectrum of homosexuality. I don't think that the correlation that you have found can be explained by anything other than "some guys are just that way." You could definitely argue that exclusive tops err more on the side of "straight" or masculine, as far as hegemonic masculinity is associated with straightness, and homosexuality with subordinate masculinity. These associations in turn are defined by society, which may change over time and by sample population.

I think that, when you are in a very intimate moment with another man, you both agree who is taking it up the arse.

Now, if this were my case, I would raise my hand immediately. I mean like, what if they are super hot. People look weird when they are getting fucked. Those awkward facial expressions, their dick scrunches up into a little ball, idk they look un-attractive. On the other hand, (or body), the top looks hot. No jokes.

You then get to watch the person on the top look hot, happy, well, really happy, and well, also make awkward facial expressions.

    Aha, thanks!

I think you are all kinda right. I think it has got do with your character as a person. Bottom's seem to be more a more submissive and less aggressive role and so this could be reflected in their personality. It would seem odd to have someone who is very shy, timid and harmless in nature to be suddenly very domineering in bed. They may just prefer to accommodate their partner's needs more.

I guess i am more towards the bottom side of the scale, although i cannot be sure as i have never been with a man or woman. I wouldn't say i'm timid i'm actually quite confident in my opinions, but i am pretty harmless and very rarely get angry.

Ifei's point about the extent of you gayness in relation to this scale is also interesting. I guess it would make snese for someone who is less gay to prefer to be the top. I'm pretty sure there must be a load of straight guys who decided to experiment and went for the top. But i dont think this is truly accurate, i think its more likely to be influenced by dominance of a person.

You could test this. Make a poll and do binary options e.g. Top and aggressive to bottom and timid/passive. It is going to be a very long poll, but the results would be interesting. I might actually make this poll myself

Do you have a link for this survey? I'd be interested in reading it. I can't speak from experience but I thought there was no correlation with masculinity and bottoming.

I do know that historically it was far more accepted for the penetrative partner to be the older, more masculine dominant one, in fact it was an insult in the ancient world (I can't remember if it was Greece or Rome or both off the top of my head) to be accused of being the receptive one.

Hmm... I don`t know if I think it is that easy. There is a psychological aspect here, that has nothing to do with gender. For example, from personal experience, I am a very controlled person in my everyday life. I am a control freak, who is always a little stress. I am exclusively a bottom, by preference (not always by action), because when I am with someone dominant, who will take all controll from me, I can relax on a very deep level. It is like a cleansing of my inner persona, where she gets to just chill out! Also, pain activates my pleasure center. It`s very physical, lol! Anger as well! If something pisses me off, it turns me on, regardless of what I am doing at the moment, which is something I brought with me into BDSM. I get dominated -> I get angry = I get turned on -> I get sassy -> I get a smack on the face = double happiness

For the record, I do not prefer hairy women, tall women or older women :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
So, me being a bottom does not affect me like your theory says.

I'm a bottom I'd rather get it then give it to be honest. I don't like hairy men and yes I do like older men but not like 30 or 40 I like guys around the age 21-24. And I'm not a small bone build I am rather thin but I'm not pre teen sized and I shave I'm not naturally hairless and I don't shave my legs only my chest and stomach and trim my pubes. I'm not feminine I mean sometimes I can be I do like fashion but I'm not all Girly about it. And yes I do like tall men but same height or slightly taller then me I don't want to be looking up all the time.

I'm versatile and even though I do about 80% of the bottoming in my current relationship I prefer younger and more androgynous men. But then again, I also like women.

I don't think there's any reliable correlation between being bi and being mostly a top, nor do I think that the stereotypes about bottoms are reliable either.

What I've seen is, many newer gays convince themselves they are only tops because they're afraid of trying bottoming, or they try it once and are unable to take the time to relax and enjoy it. But once they do... they are almost always converted to being vers.

At the end of the day, some guys prefer the sensation they get from topping, some from bottoming, and many enjoy both. I don't think you can accurately make any other assessments than that.

Never considered bottoms particular selfless (no matter sexual orientation). Everybody is in it to get some kind of satisfaction - even a bottom.

For me, I am mostly an androgyne bisexual but potentially both top and bottom. So I don't think fit into the correlation.

There may be a spectrum of homosexuality, but I don't think "straight" or "transgender" exist on that scale. Instead of having "straight" at one end of the spectrum and "transgender" at the other end, I think "dominant" and "submissive" belong on either ends of the spectrum. The OP seems to be correlating hegemonic masculinity with heterosexuality (and the norm of men being dominant in sex), but I don't think hegemonic masculinity means that someone is "closer to being straight." It just means they're dominant; they're not "less gay." Likewise, submission in males shouldn't be correlated with femininity as society wants it to be. Submissive tendencies are just a part of one's personality.

To conclude, dominance/hegemonic masculinity doesn't translate to "strength"/top, and submission/femininity doesn't translate to "weakness"/bottom. It's really just personality and preference with little to no reflection on one's "gayness" or sexuality or gender identity.

    Good points.

I don't know if it is a myth, but it is also said that many powerful men indulge in submission in private. At least, I don't think socially dominant is always the same as sexually dominant.

I'm not sure any of the stuff you present is very reliable...
Could be wrong. Very interesting none the less I have thought about something along those lines.

I don't know what I like yet with a partner, But I feel I would be versatile.

I have a very dominating personality and want to be alpha. But went it comes to being in love I will submit (I think) to please the other person too. I don't want my partner to be 100% top or bottom. Same goes for myself. I find it... unfair?

I think I'm a bottom (not actually tried yet), but I consider myself pretty masculine.

So who is gayer? Me , or a feminine guy who is a top?

As a 'Exclusive Bottom' pretty much, I love young twinky smooth type guys. Hairy guys and older guys generally are a huge turn off for me
Thought I'd throw my two cents in there.
