Hi everybody, I saw an anonymous thread asking what everybody thought about a swearing ban on EmptyClosets a while ago, so I got the idea to make a poll out of it. So, a swearing ban? Yes? No? Why?

I say nay. I find swearing bans can get rather complicated, like what constitutes as swearing and such. Plus, there are times where you just need to swear.

  3. I don't think it's necessary, for the most part.

I think that people should be allowed to use bad words as long as they don't over-do it. For example, the Jersey Shore. We don't need that many bad words.

If a "swearing ban" is enacted, then the debate will be over what words qualify as "swear words."

I swear like a sailor in real life. I'm trying to cut down because I feel like it makes you sound uneducated. However, that's my personal choice and I would be upset if that right was taken away from me. Say no to censorship!

There is more utility in allowing people to express their anger or emphasis with traditional vulgar language than there is in banning it.

I personally don't care. I don't swear online, especially since I have plenty of time to think of more effective words to use, but reading it doesn't really bother me since it is so common.
If it was banned, I probably wouldn't even notice.

No. Not that I swear much, I'm just not a big fan of censorship.

I say no, I swear quite often and a swearing ban would just kill me.

No way. Swearing doesn't bother me, and frankly, there are times when the extra emphasis is needed. "Darn it" and "crap" don't always cut it.

I say yes. Swearing discourages true self-expression. I do understand that these words do have there place in extremely emotional contexts, and we can be an emotional community at times, but I think it's good for everyone to be able to think and express themselves clearly instead of shouting obscenities.

I don't see a problem with swearing. If you're old enough to use the internet then you've heard most of, if not all, of those words before.

    Exactly

Then we better ban "sexual" words, too. If I can't say "well, shit, that sucks" then I sure as heck better not have to look at some of the stuff I see! We are big people. We can handle big words!

but aren't half of those swear words have to deal with sex, poop, urine, feces, defecation, body sludge, orgasm, penis, vagina, erotica?

The staff's position in the past has been that swearing is perfectly allowable as long as people aren't swearing at each other. As it stands, there aren't any plans to put a swearing ban in place.

I'm personally opposed to any limit to profanity apart from hate speech/insults, and would be interested to hear any compelling argument supporting an outright ban on profanity.

I wonder with the Mythbusters finding that swearing improves physical pain, maybe it improves emotional pain, too?

There is no room for censorship of any kind on these forums, and a swearing ban would just put a damper on our creative support and advice. We are mostly all creative people, and using profanity in writing and speech is a creative way to spice things up or emphasize something, and we should not lose that ability to fully express ourselves, even if it means dropping an f-bomb.

As others said, no, because not everyone agrees with what a swear word is.

Damn, Hell, Crap, Suck, etc. can be considered swear words by quite a lot of people, but not by just as many.
