    76+ (or 78 or 82) countries with anti-homosexuality laws

Laws against homosexual activity are on the books in at least 78 countries.

The total is 82 if you include political entities such as Gaza/Palestine, the Turkish-controlled northern portion of Cyprus, and Indonesia, where two large provinces outlaw homosexual acts.

The total is 76-plus countries, according to a list from the St. Paul’s Foundation for International Reconciliation, which uses that measure in its Spirit of 76 Worldwide program aimed at repealing those laws.

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, or ILGA, lists the following 78 (plus 4) countries with criminal laws against sexual activity by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex people (LGBTIs). Links in the list lead to this blog’s posts about individual countries.

Two Asian/Middle Eastern countries are listed separately by the ILGA under the heading “Legal status of homosexual acts unclear or uncertain”:

Remarkably, until less than 10 years ago there was a similar law in England, Wales and Scotland. Now two of those three countries have more-or-less passed gay marriage.

We will soon have that propaganda law on a federal level, too.

Only one deputy in the State Duma lower house voted against it!

If were born in such country, what would you do? (Just curious.)

In USA they say "It gets better". We choose between "Be strong" and "Emigrate as soon as possible" here.

    Makes me sad.

There are still anti-sodomy laws on the books in much of the deep South in the United States as well, they are just not consistently enforced.

Qatar is also meant to be 'just like Europe' despite being amongst a sea of intolerance, so I'm told.

Moral of the post: people are uneducated and ignorant.

I don't usually get really fired up and angry, but what always makes me angry is stuff like this. Not that it has to do with homosexuality, just that there is literally no logic behind it whatsoever. I am honestly dumbfounded as to how in the year 2013 humanity is still at a point where two people can't show their affection. I mean come on, how can you be so stupid? I know how whiny I sound right now, and I don't mean to sound hard headed or anything like that. It's just that.. I can't wrap my head around this stuff.

They can't be enforced because of Lawrence vs. Texas

I am surprised Singapore is on that list. As far as I know it has one of the highest rates of tolerance in Asia. But I just checked Wikipedia and it seems to be true (on the books at least). Sad.

Also of note is the strong correlation between the countries where homosexual activity is illegal and the predominant religion of those said countries.

    Interesting.

True. But Lawrence vs. Texas only took place about 10 years ago. That is really not a very long time ago.

I don't remember that case too well, and frankly I'm too burned out to bother Googling. But I'm pretty sure a lot of far out conservaties were unhappy. Even I was seeing bumper stickers that criticised Lawrence vs. Texas 2,000 miles away.

And I'm also pretty sure there are conservatives who'd be all too happy to do anything to get those laws back on the books. And I can't imagine them just giving up. These are the same people who are battling Roe vs. Wade 40 years later, after all.

I don't know enough to say, but I wonder if Section 28 wasn't also helped considerably by AIDS. At that time, AIDS was fairly new, and very scary. And it was very much seen as a "gay" disease. (I guess there still is that view. But I think the view was probably worse back then.) I can see all this helping to make something like Section 28 pass.

    No kidding.

I can see names on that list of places I'd never go for any number of other reasons, too.

Ahah.. you're not wrong .. people judges you if you get too close (physically) to someone in the same gender as yours even you don't mean anything, and sometimes they say "yucks! Gay! So disgusting!"
I, really want to move out..
