New evidence shows that heavy users suffer isolation, fatigue and withdrawal symptoms

Tense? Angry? Can't get online? Internet addiction is now a serious public health issue that should be officially recognised as a clinical disorder, according to a leading psychiatrist.

Excessive gaming, viewing online pornography, emailing and text messaging have been identified as causes of a compulsive-impulsive disorder by Dr Jerald Block, author of an editorial for the respected American Journal of Psychiatry. Block argues that the disorder is now so common that it merits inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the profession's primary resource to categorise and diagnose mental illnesses.

Addiction or esculated dependancy on anything, whether it be a substance, activity or physical object is an 'illness' or psychological problem.

There's a big difference between addiction and spending a lot of time online. If you can spend hours and hours online, but you can get up to use the bathroom and eat food and grab the mail, and then get off when you need to do something, you're probably fine. But if you find yourself mindlessly visiting sites just because you have nothing else to do online, then you might need to turn off the pc :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

You can get addicted to anything, as Micah says. And it's never good.

I couldn't agree more. Since my financial situation has always been unstable, there have been quite a few times where we can't afford to have internet access, and every time I go through major withdrawal, like, physically. So yeah, I believe it.
