"Generation screwed"

I wouldn't say screwed, I'd say "needs to watch what they are doing". You can't go to say, UCLA, with no money and expect not to have debt. Which means if your not going to do something that you know will make the money back easily, do not go to those higher prestige schools, theres no point.

And there is jobs, you just have to use your brain when looking for them.

 

I think it's more like "Generation Pessimistic McAnnoying Pants."

We have it "hard" ---- bull. Our grandparents had to go through the Great Depression! The stories I've heard.....Or they went through WW1 or 2, The Cold War....

It's all about perspective. I think if we remain fairly positive and SMART, we can handle this. But, being "smart and logic" aren't words we can use for a majority of people...

jobs jobs now u can't even get into a job. In the old days u could get into one now.. all the employers want their employees to be super genius.. oh well my views on this one is kinda bad i doubt we will go longer like that cuz that debt has to be paied or all the poor fellahs stay on earth while guys with the cash get 2 have time in space.. flying around like dorks

You do bring up a good point, about how much people are expecting. I am wanting to get into nursing school, and wow! The stuff I have to learn. My mom has been a nurse for 30 years and she didn't have this tough of a time. The average on my last anatomy test was a 68! That's failing in the eyes of the nursing program.

Also, there aren't any "pre" nursing classes that focus on the personality - there's really no way to weed out the ones who are in it just to have job security or make money. I think too many people are doing that and it is sad.

I was too at one point until I realized what Owen's quote basically said. And you gotta admit the thought of even trying to care for "this" could drive you freakin nuts.

But the worst part is, as much as it hurts, sucks, pisses you off, etc, eventually, someone's gotta walk through the fire and try to make it right.

I think Relient K summed it up quite nicely with this lyric from Be My Escape: "But the beauty of grace, Is that it makes, Life not fair."

In retrospect, I think the whole song sums up the situation quite nicely.

Not screwed yet. But keep waiting, things could get even worse for us.

 

Due to obvious reasons I can't quite relate to how things are going in the US. But I know one thing for sure. In eastern Europe the generation before me (1970s born) is the one that's screwed. After the fall of socialism this whole part of Europe was in a deep economical crisis. These people in their early 20s,including my parents,were forced to work instead of continuing with their education (with the exception of those, who were related with the socialist party and could afford it). Now my generation is the one that's far more educated than the previous, and yet people are still negative towards us.

 

With regard to college diplomas, economic pressures from globalization have resulted in turning knowledge work into another kind of assembly line, like what Henry Ford did to tradesmen such as carriage makers when he put them on the line...most left in disgust before Ford figured out that he had to pay them more.

If you want to make money these days, along with some serious cognitive challenges (true problem-solving mind-work) you could do worse than joining a trade (e.g. electrician or mechanic) and this can't be outsourced!

 

I remember when that was the "talk of the town" and I kept thinking to myself, if the entity known as "Karma" did exist, do people really think we're just going to get off that easy?....I mean we let some twisted ish go down by excuse of ignorance due to not wanting to see or ignorance due to refusal to know better. I actually found it kind of cool if an event(s) took place out of the public eye's view which would lead to an ill-fated domino effect that would result in the end of days. Kind of like the second "Terminator."

And here is your answer as to why the USA's and Western Europe's economic woes are long term. There are five billion people living in countries who are striving for our wealth, many of which are perfectly able to be as rich as us. With perfectly free markets and total globalisation, something's got to give to an extent, basically.

 

Interesting .... I think people 15-20 years ahead of me are doing great things....but people my own age? Ehhh......... I'm worried.

What you said is true. I find it thought provoking....

 

That is why something needs to happen, and needs to happen fast.
I don't even know what could fix it. I can barely wrap my head around the actual issues.

 

Our grandparents could also comfortably raise four kids in one household on a single white collar salary, and send them all to college.

Don't shit yourself here. In terms of technology we have a lot to be grateful for compared to previous generations. It's pretty awesome having the internet. Financially, we've been had. The amount of financial stability we consider 'middle class' now would've been considered poverty 50 years ago. We are living in poverty, but poverty in the first world looks different now. Now it looks like people in their mid 20s living with their parents after graduating and failing to find jobs, or getting stuck in underemployment.

But I think part of what's going on is that we're more aware of our current state of affairs than previous generations. Not much more though, unfortunately, not enough to change anything radically.
