Lesbian is a horrible sounding word.

I don't like the word lesbian. For me, it doesn't roll off the tongue or meet the ear very pleasantly. I haven't got a problem with what it means, I just hate the word. I also hate the word vagina. Again, I think they're great, just hate the word. If I have to tell someone about my orientation, I tell people that I'm gay.

Does anybody else agree with me on this one.

I love the word lesbian!

Though if I thought people would recognize it, I'd use "sapphist". It's definitely my favorite term to describe a woman who loves other women.

Lol, I've not heard that one before. I don't know very many euphemisms aside from the normal dyke and rug muncher etc. We should have a list to pick from.

If I were you, I would use the word gay, it's sounds nicer  But I don't mind the word lesbian either

Ha, I was just about to say "what about sapphist?". Sapphism is a term I find immensely more pleasing to say, but it also makes me feel a teeny, tiny bit like I'm being a bit pretentious, especially if I try to explain about Sappho and how the term lesbian(ism) came to be the prominent term used :icon_redf.

    Words are lovely though.

I don't like it either, so I just say I like girls and I don't like labels.

I heard someone say to a girl once "don't you like boys or summat" & the girl replied "no, i'm allergic to nuts" which I thought was a good answer for being attracted to other girls, I think there is a slang word for a vagina, that probably sounds better "Rubyfruit Jungle", which I think came from the 70's

There is something I don't quite like about the word "lesbian." I think there may be a lot to be said for just saying "gay."

I also don't like the word "vagina." It sounds a little clinical to me. (I also admit that I don't have much interest in the body part itself for reasons I'm sure you can all guess!)

On the male side of things, I don't really like the word "penis." Too cold, too clinical. Most other words feel too vulgar. (Part of this might be a bad experience growing up. I came home from school so excited because I'd learned a new vocabulary word for my favorite part of my body. My father went through the roof, and told me I'd never, ever use that word in the house again.) Other words feel too childish.

    :roflmao: Me too!!

I like sapphist too. Sounds rather elegant to me. I remember first time I heard about Sappho and the island of Lesbos. It was in eighth grade and my history teacher was helping me figure out a topic for my report and suggested the island of Lesbos. Boy in my class looked over as we were talking and said, “Isn’t that how the word lesbian came?” And yeah, it is, and a few years back (I think when I did my report) some of the islanders petitioned to ban homosexuals using lesbian, saying it “violated their human rights as it is "insulting" and disgraces them around the world.” Thinking of history I can see why it can sound distasteful and such, but I don’t think I have an issue using it.

I prefer using the word gay. I honestly think of the word "lesbian" as a type of porn that appeals to men. I guess the word lesbian just seems too demeaning and sexual to me. I never used that word but since I joined support groups gay men always seem to correct me when I use the term gay. They usually repeat what I say and replace "gay" with "lesbian." I don't understand why gay men are offended with me using the word gay. I just hate calling myself a lesbian. I've never heard lesbian being used in a positive way.

I can't say it, either. Of course, I've yet to really say I'm gay/lesbian/whatever out loud. I freeze and can't speak. It has made coming out super stressful...I have to get creative every time to get my point across. Lol. I will get there someday...I think one I've truly accepted this as me.

i don't like the word lesbian as well and i hate the german word for it 'Lesbisch'

I usually go with I am gay if i am talking english but if i talk german i use 'homo'

Germans think that you can only use gay for boys 'schwul' but it's not true hehe

and i don't want to explain everything that's why i use homo

If I have to tell someone online, I just say lesbian, but if it's out loud, I usually say gay. It's easier to say gay, and people won't question it, I think when you tell someone that you're lesbian it brings up a lot more questions than if you just say "I'm gay." At least, in my experience, that's how it is.

Diddo. I say I'm gay, too.

I think it's very odd sounding and holds a negative connotation.
Before I came out as trans*, I admitted to being gay. "Lesbian" makes me want to barf.

Guess it doesn't really matter much to me... I use "gay" and "lesbian" interchangeably describing myself.
