    My name is Joe. I used to live in a very strict non-gay scottish village and I just moved to a conservative North Carolinian town called Wilmington. i really need help gaining a foothold

    So you're a fellow Scot who moved to NC Wow!

    My boyfriend is from there originally he has had a lot of intolerance from people around there

    Maybe look online and see if there are any LGBT-oriented groups in the general area. It could help you find others in your situation.

    Just checked and if you google "Wilmington Pride" you should get the website of a local org that should provide a foothold to what's available there. Also google "Wilmington gay life" or "North Carolina gay life" or similar. You might also check the Meetup website and see what's around.

    Bear in mind also that there are other cities in NC that are larger and may be more liberal that you can visit on weekends and such.

    Since you mention coming from a conservative place, you may or may not find your new home familiar. Certainly things like PDA are not going to be accepted except in very specific circumstances or locations.

    There are places, people, and resources available but be cautious until you've located these and know the lay of the land.
