Glad I'm not the only one. I've never heard that term used, granted I haven't heard a lot of alternative terms for a gay man where I'm at.
It's a *very* dated term. It was popular in the 30s and 40s. A few people use it today more as a joke than anything else.
Under the "Misunderstanding" heading in the Wiki article: I am dying of laughter! :roflmao: Anyway, on-topic, I always thought it was a reference to Judy Garland, but it seems to predate any of her major gay followings. Euphemisms are hard to date, though, because they usually start rather secretly.
