I remember reading somewhere once that there used to be different species of humans.

Do you think its possible that there are still different species of humans?

    Opinions below please.

No, we are the only species of human left. This isn't a matter of opinion it's fact (supported by evidence).

Oh. I read the second question wrong. Never mind.

What, do you think there are neanderthals (sp?) hidden in some undiscovered place? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

No, I don't think so. I'm under the impression that evolution of a species into a new species is a long process and fuelled by natural selection. Considering how most humans survive, rather than the fittest, and we don't have to struggle for life, we don't evolve that much.

We're the only remaining members of Genus Homo. Unfortunayely, the reason they're dead is probably that we killed them off.

A different homo species on Flores could have existed up until ~12,000 years ago, around the same time as 'cities' of 500+ people started to develop around present day Iraq/Syria.

We are currently one species of humans, although there might be traces of interbreeding with other similar species from the past.

Same species, different phenotypes. To have different species you have to have, among other things, an inability for a member of one group to mate with a member of the other group who is of the opposite gender. Think dogs.

Specifically, members of different species cannot reproduce to produce fertile offspring. As far as I know, there are some mixes (think horse and donkey) that can reproduce, but their offspring aren't fertile.

I'm sure if you go far enough back, we'll find a group of humans we couldn't have reproduced with, but if you're referring to neanderthals, europeans have 1-4% neanderthal DNA, meaning we did reproduce with them. And no, there certainly aren't separate species of human wandering around unnoticed. We have a VERY large population base, and we've explored virtually every part of the land on this planet. I find it highly improbably that we have yet to come across a civilisation build by another species.

I would just like to say that my personal theory is that their could be different species of human walking around here. We all look different, but mostly the same, and there are so many wildly different people, how could you say its impossible. We could all look similar, but have minor difference. I wasn't suggesting that there are still knuckle dragging caveman. But we have the tribal populations of the world, people on different continents and islands, it just seems foolish to me to assume that all 6 billion + people on this planet are exactly the same.

No, no one is exactly the same. But it has already been established that it is not a different species if reproduction to produce fertile offspring is possible, and its safe to assume that people of opposite gender, assuming there is no infertility or damage to the reproductive system, should be able to reproduce.

All humans are supposed to share a common ancestor who was a human with the same phenotype, as in a homo sapiens, and there hasn't really been time to evolve into another species yet.

We reproduced with them though. And apart from what remains of them in our DNA, they are extinct.

Oh, and PS, we killed them, us humans. As in genocide.
