Hey all. I will be in DC for a month and was wondering what cool things there are to do there. I've been there before and have toured the monuments and some museums and was wondering what else there is to do.
I'm pretty sure that's in Virginia. But I'll forgive you because your profile says you're not from here . But my personal favorite part of DC was the Air and Space Museum as part of the Smithsonian. But planes are sort of my thing hehe.
I've never been there but will only have access to public transportation no car. Is it easy to get to? ---------- Post added 5th May 2013 at 12:59 PM ---------- I haven't been to that museum I'll give it a shot.
Hey, Welcome to Washington! I've been in college here for the past four years and love finding interesting things to do beyond the touristy stuff. Here are some suggestions since you're here for a whole month. -Call your Congressman's office and ask for a staff led (or intern led) tour. That way you dont get thrown into a huge group, you can probably sit at your Congressman's desk and (if Congress is not in session) you can go up to the Speaker's Balcony. -Take a walk on Roosevelt Island, which is between DC and Virginia. There are lots of pristine trails and there's a giant statue of Teddy Roosevelt. -Find a friend or two and go have a picnic in Gravelly Point Park, which is at the end of Reagan Airport's runway. You can chill, maybe throw a frisbee around and watch the planes take off over your head. It's cool. -Hit up one of the free shows at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Look for "Millennium Stage" on there website. They have one free show every day. -Go get drinks at Dan's Cafe in Adams Morgan. It's a really divey joint that serves booze out of squirt bottles. It's cool. -Go see some standup at the DC Improv. I always have a great time there. -DC has a gay sports bar called Nellie's and a gay dance club called Town. I've only started this whole coming out process about two weeks ago, so I haven't been yet. Both of which are incredibly popular though. -The Farmer's Market at Eastern Market is AWESOME. There's also a friendly local board game store near there that I love. -Watch an oral argument at the Supreme Court. -Go to a DC United soccer game. Even if you don't like soccer (which honestly, I really don't) it's a hell of a lot of fun to go watch how insane the soccer fans are. They roll out giant flags and honk horns. They chant nonstop and occasionally throw smoke bombs and get courted off by the police. It's absolutely insane. Hopefully one or more of those suggestions will sound good to you. There's a lot to discover in the DC area. I hope you have a good time here.
One of my close friends goes to school there. I've heard of the club "town"... I know she's said the clubs, especially the gay ones, are great. There are always the usual tourist spots, but I always suggest doing research on the "undiscovered" parts of the city. Like... Google Washington, D.C. Undiscovered or something similar. I'm not sure how much is out there for DC, but you might get lucky. Have fun!
Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm not 21, or that "out" yet, so I can't do some of your suggestions, but the rest sound good. Looks like I have plenty do do. ---------- Post added 5th May 2013 at 05:42 PM ---------- I'll give google a shot. Thanks.
No problem bud. Happy to help. By the way, I like your username "U N Owen," great Agatha Christie reference.
Just a foot note, my Stepdad is researching his family history & he has recently found out that he is related to George Washington, how cool is that
besides the museums and monuments (madam tussauds was my favorite!), u could catch a show at the kennedy center, i know there are a number of tours they do - ive even seen segway tours sometimes when im riding through the area. u can check this site out, they have a lot of information on attractions u can find Washington.org - Official Tourism Site of Washington, DC enjoy ur stay!!! :smilewave
I found Arlington National Cemetery a good and sombre place to visit, it houses the tomb of the unknown solider and the Kennedys among other things.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out. ---------- Post added 6th May 2013 at 01:55 PM ---------- I've already been there but it's still a cool place to visit.
