Activism vs Pacifism

My best times were when I traveled to Nepal as part of my training in Clinical Psychology to learn about and help correct the physical, emotional and social difficulties facing Nepal after the war. It made me feel so alive

Went with the "happy medium", but without the happy. I tend to avoid debating with people, because it's usually pointless and takes too much effort. However, if a person happens to walk on a land mine, he won't leave my surrounding unscathed. I have low tolerance for willful ignorance.

 

Can't you be both a pacifist and activist?
Many pacifist in history And other peaceful people where pretty vocal about their beliefs including MLK,Ghandi,Lennon etc.

 

I'm an extremely outspoken person. Mostly with my LGBT beliefs.

 

This is how I feel- peaceful but vocalized. ^-^

 

There is not a dichotomy between the two.

 

This guy's got it. Pacifism is avoidance of violence at all costs, whereas activism is volunteering your resources to a cause.

I understand the basic idea of the thread though, and I'd say I'm a happy medium. Know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em, if you will. Reaction to anything is entirely dependent on the situation.

 

I'm an activist. I always put my feelings about issues out there for people to know.

 

Pacifists can still be, and often are activists. Pacifism is a moral position on the use of force. Activism is a set of strategies for advancing a moral cause.

I think what you mean here is, are you militant or not? I am a militant queer.

Activist. Peace is the ultimate goal, I suppose, but it cannot be preserved at all costs.

 

I have been a pacifist. The one advantage is "protective coloration" which gives me a chance to hear other views on various topics (not just LGBT). But...I keep thinking I need to take a better stand on some issues (including LGBT). A huge issue, I think, is trying to meek so I say likable...although, ironically, I'm not sure I really am very likable in real life.

 

As others, I am an "activist pacifist", though by the normal definitions of the words I do not fit either of them. I am not afraid to make my views known, and will have heated discussions with people about some issues. I do however draw the line at debating with my mother or father or stepmother.
