Are there any words you guys have an unusually difficult time spelling?

For me I cannot seem to fathom how to properly spell mischievous or definite (always want to spell it mischevious and definate). Am I alone on this?

    Grammar Nazis are welcome.

None that comes to mind at the moment, but I can't remember how many times (probably in the thousands) I've looked up on Google just to make sure I wrote a word properly because something was off.

I guess that's to be expected considering English is my second language, but I sure would like to reduce my Google usage for grammar or orthography-related problems. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

There are lots of words I misspell, that's why I spent the first half of this week looking up hard to spell words and making a list of them. I had the writing part of a very important English exam a few days ago... Weirdly, my spelling used to be very good but I've got too used to spell check:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: which is a little annoying. (My results have to be above 95% to have a chance of getting into university.:icon_sad:slight_smile:

Being Dyslexic, this is a common problem Lol I am forever Googling words when I am writing my threads, or answering other peoples posts

I did start off cutting & pasting quotes when I first joined EC, but I got told off for doing this, which is OK, because it has made me put more effort into my answers

Definite is one of my words as well

I gave a class of grade 6 kids a standard 70-word spelling test which starts with really easy words and then gets harder and harder. All 27 kids stumbled on "conscientious". I'm a very good speller, but I do have trouble with that one.

Out of curiosity, if you don't mind my asking, do you get better with practice? Or is it one of those things where your brain just won't do it?

I was just realizing I should've named this thread "Werds I cen not spel" but then again the spelling of that would've probably driven me as well as others crazy.

Any word that involves multiple double consonants, ie occurrence, millennium, possession, and embarrass. When I was younger, renaissance took a while to get down.

Really, English learners have my sympathy!

Girl (it come out like.. "gell"), Pearl, Earl, Carl, Curl, anything with "-rl" in it, unless it's like girly, curly, I can still spell it. Oh, and "wrong", I spell it as "wong" -_-

enough and throat. I think it is probably cause they do not sound like how they are spelt.. Enough looks like En-ough (like a scottish person saying loch) and throat is looks like throw-at

Facetious. It immediately came to mind. I don't know why, but it's just always tripping me up! I have to tell myself "face-tee-us" in order to spell it. My best friend uses it all the time and I joke with her by saying "are you being that word I can't spell?"
