I plan on going to the U.S. sometime soon & I'm just wondering what you guys think of the Australian accent!? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Should I prepare myself for any added attention? Or will I go relatively unnoticed?

Well I was born in Hungary but I live in America. Your accent won't go unnoticed, there may be a few people coming up to you and asking where you're from. Unlike me, for you it won't get as bad as say the entire room gawking when you open your mouth.

You will definitely be noticed because of your accent. Maybe some even asking where you are from.

I, like most of my friends, think the Australian accent is really cool. So you'll probably be asked to say something just so people could hear your accent. xD

You'll definitely get noticed for the accent around here. I personally love the accent, and I had an Aussie friend that I talked to a lot and I loved his voice so much!

Most people have a thing for people with foreign accents. You may be asked where you're from. Most people will notice but won't comment on it (at least in front of you), so you should be fine.

I actually see them as wild, rustic, exuberant... and by extension, slightly 'hot'. Definitely different. And yes, I'm one of the few special Americans who can differentiate English and Australian accents.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Any extra attention you get will probably be positive. Having been to Australia with an American accent, very few people commented on it if that helps at all.

You will likely receive quite a few... Looks, in a positive way. And I am also thought to have a English accent, probably because of my vocabulary. Any people from England out there, in northern Virginia you are expected to have the vocabulary of monsters.

I LOVE Aussie accents (and can imitate one perfectly ). I had a bet from a friend that I had to act as if I had been from Australia on the first week of school (to my residential assistant, hahaha). He believed me. I won that bet

Sexy! Yeah you'll definitely be getting a little extra attention and people asking you to say things. It'll probably be mostly women though...

Well, I'm Canadian, not American, but I can tell you that if you came here, your accent would be noticed!

Personally, I'd probably peg you as an Aussie, although if you were from New Zealand I'd probably mistake you for an Aussie! Knowing that I confuse similar accents, as well as how it feels to be in the cultural shadow of a more prominent country, I tend to be cautious about assuming I know where someone is from by their accent. So although I'd be assuming Australia, if I mentioned it at all it would be to ask where you're from instead of trying to guess.

Occasionally, I've heard some Aussies who I find hard to understand. But I think it's more to do with different slang than with the accent (although accent plus slang is more difficult than slang only).
