What does everyone think of the "NY accent". I'm from there originally (although living elsewhere for the majority of my life). I have a very faint NY accent, but it comes out more when I'm angry/yelling, etc. What is your opinion on this accent? Does it sound tough, crude, rude, obnoxious, etc.? Just curious. Is it sexy?

What's the New York accent? Is that how Bugs Bunny sounds? Or the goblins from World of Warcraft?

Think of Fran Drescher from the Nanny, but less nasally (I do NOT talk like that)

This past semester we had a classmate from Puerto Rico who was raised in the Bronx. He... stood out, for lack of better terms, but no one really made a huge deal out of it. It was always fun to hear him say words like 'daughter' and 'whatever'.

My mom thinks the NY accent sounds like they are always mad. I personally don't mind it at all. The only accent I don't find pleasing is an Indian/Pakistani/Sri Lankan accent (but maybe that's because of the hours I spent with customer service yesterday )

How old were you when you moved down South? Do you say "you'se guys" or "y'all?"

My mom's side of the family is all from NY, and a few of them have accents.

I'm pretty ambivalent about it. It's not as bad as a southern accent, but does sound sort of obnoxious at times. I have the *slightest* hint of one from time to time, but spend more time faking it to poke fun than actually having it for real.

'Ey you! You tawkin' ta me?

There was a girl in one of the classes I just finished who had a New York (or northern? I can't tell them apart) accent and it was the sexiest thing ever.

I'm interested in how some people claim to be born in New York and not have an accent........when all Americans have accents.......

Either some are claiming to have a different accent other than NY, despite living in the state, or some of us are just completely unaware of our own accent. Which is a common occurrence.

I'm from Brooklyn... but I hate that accent.

It just comes off as crass... I only develop one (unconsciously) when I'm around people who intimidate me. Usually I speak with more of a general American accent... pronouncing r's and all that.

I have the same thing. I pronounce all my r's and speak more or less with a Gen. American accent (I live in the South, so I've had to hahaha). Only when I'm intimidated or angry does it come out.

  16. I live in New York, and I don't really have a NY accent. Sometimes I think it comes out on certain words, I'll pronounce particular letters with more emphasis than others.

I don't mind it, I lived with it for my whole life basically. And I still say some words with a NY accent at times.

New York meaning New York city area -- when you get upstate you get an entirely different set of accents, some much more related to the accents in Wisconsin for example.

In terms of NYC, there are actually quite a few accents, some of them regional/locational, some of them class-based. Having lived in Manhattan for 10 years I found that those from NYC who "don't have an accent" -- in other words who speak a more standard American dialect -- tend to be clustered in Manhattan in certain non-working class areas.

Then there are the NY metro area accents -- Long Gisland, New Jersey; and within NJ there are a range of accents. But I think to most Americans outside that area they kind of sound the same.

Me, I like the NYC area accents a lot.
