I just checked my email and the university I'm going to in the fall sent me a message saying that I should get an HIV test before I head off to college in the fall, probably because on their housing application, they asked me my orientation and I answered honestly. Isn't that profiling? Just because I'm gay you tell me to run out and have a test. Seriously? I had a fling with one guy a year ago and we used protection, and now I'm in a monogamous relationship with a guy who was a virgin at the start. I'm pretty sure I'm negative.

Are you sure they only suggested an HIV test because of your orientation?

It is probably a good idea to get tested often if you are sexually active.

Do you have any straight friends? Did they get the same message?

I don't know anyone else who's going there this fall. I'm the only one in my graduating class
that's going there. I'll have to ask when I go to orientation in a couple weeks

If you can find out if men who answered straight on the profile didn't get the same notice, then it might be profiling.

Unless they ask EVERYONE to get the test, and not just LGBT's, it is absolutely profiling.

Even if this does end up being profiling, I'm not quite sure why there's a reason to be super offended by it.

It's not like they suggested something absolutely insane just because you're gay; getting tested is a good practice.

well, in my uni, anyone who lives in a dorm have to get a meningitis shot, but I don't know about others.

what does the university website says about getting tested/shots/whatever?

I'll agree with you that getting tested is a good thing. However, I disagree that someone should not be offended by being requested by a University to take a HIV test. I'd find it pretty offensive if I were asked to take some tests just because of my sexual orientation.

Third this. An analogous situation would be if the college only sent information on financial literacy workshops to African Americans but didn't do the same for Caucasians. Sure, African Americans, thanks to centuries of social and legal oppressionon average have less wealth than Caucasians, but that doesn't mean you single out people based on a characteristic that may or may not affect them more than the population in general.

Unless this is some sort of religious school where you suspect there is institutional homophobia within the administration that would motivate deliberately trying to intimidate gay students... I just don't see a reason to be offended by this...gay men should be getting tested for HIV, especially in a university environment where the chance for sexual encounters is high.

If they're only sending it to gay or bi students, then look at it as the university taking special care to ensure the health issues of LGBTQ students are being taken care of, it's the straight students who are being left out.

    i like this response.
i mean, it's a good and bad thing. -generally- you will hear straight people going around precariously and somehow contract babies or STD and ruined their future/education. then in the gay-friendly unis they will probably talk about or have brochures on HIV or something.

    good and bad
