I think we should fully explore our own planet before we explore others.

... I was already afraid of the ocean before reading this... Now I'm completely terrified to get in the water... And I'm going to the beach in two weeks. *sigh*

I think the creepiest thing is the goblin shark. It looks pretty stupid until its jaws jump out of its face and grab shit.

I'm sorry to hear that. Most likely, you won't see any of that. I'm totally jealous though. I want to go to the beach! I hope you have fun. It'll be OK. Don't worry about it. People don't see things like that unless they go into the depths looking for them. I promise, you'll be OK. Have a great time. :icon_bigg

If it wasn't for the fact I'm going with my family I'd gladly let you go in place. I'm probably gonna get burned the first day and wind up in a tea bath the rest of the week.

The reasons for being scary are actually what makes it so interesting for me. Such things as vampire squids and those bioluminescent fish. *sigh* I want to watch more Planet Earth and ocean documentaries.

Also the most scary thing on that page was that picture of that lady with the badly tanned face, it's the lady with her faced ripped off incident for me all over again.

Fear not. There are no jellyfish. There are plenty worse things.

You're sweet. I'm sure we'd have all kinds of fun and both end up in a tea bath because I burn really easily, too. (*hug*)

Lols these are my thoughts exactly. I can handle a pool up to 7ish feet deep, but that's pushing it. I dove in a river once (with five friends holding my hands at once) and it was the scariest shit in my life and I'd NEVER swam so fast before!!! Lols I just about knocked this one girl out when I resurfaced.

God that would be unsettling to swim at the surface of the mariana trench, and just know that there is 36,000 feet of water below you, just descending for ever. I hate swimming in open deep water.

I love it, and as a youngster I'd read of ocean life, visit aquariums, and watch documentaries, even considering becoming a marine biologist some day. Jellyfish and various deep sea creatures were always fascinating, and thinking of those giant squids which are so rare only makes me appreciate the depths of our oceans even more. Just awesome.

There's still something 'familiar' about it, a quiet nostalgia, perhaps being an Aquarian has something to do with it? I've yet to go scuba diving, and it's still on my bucket list.

    *sighs*

It's really amazing how much life is yet to be discovered at those depths and the discoveries that have yet to be discovered. Have you heard of the "Bloop"? It would be pretty amazing to find out if that was made by an undiscovered living creature.

Oooh, very fun, thanks for sharing!

I've grown up fascinated by this stuff thanks to watching Blue Planet documentaries and other such David Attenborough items. There is some seriously weird stuff down there. By which I mean seriously cool. And seriously scary. I'd really love to discover more of what's down there.

Did you know there's an octopus with ears like Dumbo? And there's a copepod which gives out flashes of light when it's scared? And there's an angler fish where the male bites the female to mate with her and then becomes an inseparable part of her body for the rest of his life? And there's hatchet fish which can change colour in order to hide from you? And there's a really long gulper eel like this...

    ... which can glow?

Emberstone: Yes, there is a GIF of some common jellyfish. (The kind without long tentacles.)
