Thing is these are not social justice people, these are social justice, justice people. People who spent their time policing social justice people and so aggressively that they say things like the bullshit above which basically amounts to demisexual erasure.
Yeah, there are jerks on Tumblr. There are jerks everywhere. The key on Tumblr is to not follow them. Me? I love Tumblr, because I don't follow blogs like this or blogs that reblog posts like those.
Either way. It's a good solid reason why I'm not interested in tumblr. I've seen more than enough screenshots of the "check your privilege" people to go "NOPE!".
And conversely, if you don't like the SJ scene on Tumblr, you've just seen the wrong blogs. Tumblr has taught me more about social justice than I could ever hope to have learned anywhere else. It taught me about causes I didn't even know existed and why they're important, and it taught me about patterns of oppression I didn't even know I was contributing to and how I could stop. It's good stuff. I mean, what are people more likely to screenshot: the occasional ridiculous posts, or the regular thoughtful, educational ones?
I've dealt with social justice people. I have one on another forum that routinely harasses me. It's something I flat want to stay away from.
Yea that's what I like about tumblr to, but the one time I joined, years ago, I kept getting related tumblrs showing up, which included jerk-ass posts like the one in the OP.
I have a Tumblr and I do read some social justice blogs, but I hate how people use it as a way to bully others and it pisses me off that some people involved expect everyone else to tiptoe around their feelings while gleefully throwing around slurs and telling people to kill themselves. I get the feeling that they're more interested in power-tripping than actually discussing racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Also, quite a few people tend to use social justice as a way to express some really vile beliefs.
What Owen said. I'm on the outskirts of Tumblr's SJ community, and I've found it to be an excellent resource for combating the various negative ideas (transphobia, racism, slut shaming) that were instilled in me by my upbringing. It's easy to find a niche that has put serious thought into its arguments.
Like I said. I have one that goes out of her way to harass me on another site. Seriously. It's so much fun being called transphobic /sarcasm. I'm not going to go out of my way to put myself in such a situation. Besides that, I don't really see the point of tumblr.
