During the 60s, some US states used literacy tests to keep blacks from voting. Today, a friend on Facebook posted a link to a test Louisiana used. It was interesting--and appalling--to see this test. Question: how many of us could pass this test? Could You Pass The Literacy Test Given To Black Voters In The 1960s
This. But yeah, it's despicable that they made that ruling on the voter rights act. There is STILL racism in this country, and if given the chance, Southern states WILL do this again.
I think you might be a little over-presumptuous. Yes, racism is still a problem that should not be overlooked, but I don't think the south still has intentions to enslave or strip the rights of blacks, especially now when some of the most prominent southerners are African-Americans.
I live in Louisiana and I only know a few racist people but most people are accepting of African-Americans.
Such awkward wording. I like to take my time on things, and I definitely wouldn't have finished on time. Draw a "line around" I think I spend a minute looking at that instead of 20 seconds.
That's incredibly stupid. I've always been really good at reading but that isn't really a reading test it's a mind bender. The whole point is to trick you. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled this kind of crap on immigrants.
I think I'd take a lawyer to get this right because so many of the questions are poorly worded, on purpose no less. The purpose of this test was to disenfranchise those whose grandfathers were unable to vote before the Civil War (read: African Americans) but to let the poor and illiterate white folk from voting. I'll admit I don't think I could do this 100% right in 10 minutes.
I don't think I could even do it in ten minutes. I'd get too stressed on finishing on time that I'd make a LOT of mistakes. Plus, the questions are worded oddly. Racism is sad.
In Mississippi or Alabama or some place in the south, the "literacy test" was actually, at one point, written in a foreign language in some polling precincts. The Republican Party's willingness to disenfranchise through lies, deception, and dishonesty has a long and rich tradition. I suppose this is because they would never be able to win honestly with their backwards, bigoted agenda.
