Easiest way to describe is a transcript Whilst driving. Mum: Why do you want to take time off uni? Me: Because my heads not in it, my minds in other places. Mum: Where is it? Me: None of your business, it doesn't concern you. Mum: (in a silly voice that she does) You're not gay are you? (laughs) Me: (in a how-is-that-relevant/denial tone) Would that even matter? She didn't answer, and the conversation just moved on. SO CONFUSED!!!!! - could she suspect? - did she use a silly voice to make me feel comfortable? - has my sister who I'm out to mentioned something? - was it just a joke/throw away statement? I don't know what to do, I only know I'm not ready to come out to her.
She might suspect... either way, if you're not ready then just don't say anything Change the topic if she asks again
Maybe your sister was talking to someone on the phone about it and your mom overheard it. I'm under the theory that parents always know when one of their kids is gay. Do you and your mom have a good relationship?
Instantly after hearing the words "you're not gay are you?", did your ears get all blocked up, like you couldn't hear anything except those last few words and it's as if what she had said was said on loudspeakers out in public; all the while, you're trying to keep your composure and making it look as if nothing was amiss. There were two times before I first came out, where I got directly asked like that. It was such a surreal feeling haha. If this advice is any use - you're right to pace yourself and come out when you're ready, and for as long as it's within your control, you should do so. The fact that your mum brought it up though says to me that she's at least considered the possibility (and may have in fact thought about it a lot, but just didn't know how to deal with it). Anticipate that coming out to her will happen sooner rather than later, and plan for how you'll deal with it, even if you're not quite ready.
maybe she has no clue at all just guessing for a reason why you need time out from uni . doubt you sister would say anything .
people often use car journeys to have tricky conversations.. no need for eye contact etc was she 'fishing' for info
