Awhile back, my straight/bi-curious friend shared the information that he is into bears, after I told him I was interested in them. I identified as aromantic asexual back then, so my attraction to them was only aesthetic (well, that's all I would admit to myself).

He also expressed that he has no interest in relationships at the moment.
    ...
I just recently told him that I am gay and have a boyfriend. He was a bit surprised, but happy for me.

D'you think it's okay to encourage him to explore? I think he's the type that'll only change when he's ready, but maybe I could just sort of... suggest something?

Just be there to support your friend. Your friend should take this time to discover who he really is. I suggest that you could encourage him, just not to the point of...how do I put this...to the point that you're making the decision for him (not that you'd do that). Good luck!
