Hi! I haven't read the book but maybe you could read some book reviews on it which will help you to understand the book. As it seems that you have some time, do try reading the book again though. Hope this helps!

The book is about one of the most important cases in the history of American Constitutional law, Gideon v. Wainwright. In that case, the US Supreme Court ruled that all persons accused of crimes in this country for which they could lose their liberty are entitled to an attorney, even if they cannot afford one. Prior to that case, it was possible for the government to send someone to prison without counsel, if they could not afford a lawyer.

that makes more sense than what i read
    >__>
it's because the story starts off about Gideon's letter, then it goes off into explaining how the Supreme Court works
    that's where i got lost

    Thanks for the help!~
