My friend and I were talking the other day about what we have heard in response to us telling people "I'm gay" (as a lesbian) and here is our list so far...

    Are you sure?
You are too pretty to be gay.
You just have not found the right man.
    It's just a phase.
    Who's on top?
    Let's do a threesome.
    Which one is the girl?

So I was wondering what are the responses you have gotten from coming out??

Nothing too sensational, my friends already know some gay people so fortunately they already know what NOT to say for the most part.

"Really? Really!? So, ARE you dating anyone?"

"It's ok if you like the dames."

People put their own words on it but the message is usually "Really? Your messing with me right?"

I had dinner plans with the person I came out to and on our way to the restaurant I simply informed them of my orientation and got an alright, good reply. And then we started talking about what we were going to eat. I feel that the people in my life are generally not too judgemental when it comes to these sort of things, but then again I pick my friends very carefully.

The best was from my parents:
"So would your girlfriend like to come to Thanksgiving?"

I do get the "but you're too pretty to be gay" or "I would never have guessed" reactions a lot. Always difficult to know how to respond to those. The challenges are worse ("you're only gay because you haven't slept with me yet")..so creepy.

I've come out to my three closest friends and here are their responses:
    'Okay... Is that it?'
'It's not like it makes any difference, it just gets a lot of bad press.'
*hand over heart* 'aw... That's so cute! I'm so happy you felt like you could come out to ME'
So their responses were pretty good. But then again, I made sure I knew how they would react before telling them.

    "Oh, really?"
    "Oh, everything makes sense now."
"You know that means you're going to have sex with a girl, right? Are you 100% sure?"
"We accept you and like you just as you are. Be yourself!"
"I guess I don't have good gaydar then."
"Why? Why are you doing this to me!?"

Aside from my mom it's been positive. Can you guess which response is hers?

    I have another one...
I'm in the process of writing my memoir...gonna be published on February 14 . I have been posting little tidbits on my FB page and my childhood friends are coming out of the woodwork with affirmations of support. But one called me the other night...I think she was drunk...and started naming everyone that she knew was gay. Then asking me if I knew them. Why do people think all gays and lesbians know each other? I get this kind of response all the time!!

"Ok", is one I get a lot.
Sometimes it's a long, stretched okeeeey, followed by a wink. Those are annoying.
Sometimes it's an 'oookaaay?' and they don't know for sure why I'm telling them or they don't believe me, can't see the difference.
A neutral "ok" is the best, because it shows it's really not a big deal to the other person. I like that.

Great thing 'bout coming out via text is that you will always know how it went:
(Me): I think I'm bi (in spanish(I use bi instead of pan because nobody (I know) has any idea what pan is(man, so many parenthesis(bracets))))
    (My friend): Bi?
    (Me): *facepalm*
    (My friend): Why?
    (Me): Why wat?
    (My friend): DW

    A few nights later:
    (My friend): PENIS!
    (Me): *sigh*

    I knew you were gay.
    (My friend): 8--
    Gay pride
    (Me): told you so.
Personally prefer pink purple blue over rainbows.

That is word for word what happened.

I've only very recently started telling people.

The response has almost all been "so what"

"Yeah... I knew there was something off about you from the start." - my girl friend and a co-worker.

"Holy shit! You like dick?" - my ex-roommate. He is an awesome guy, though.

"I though so, because of your earrings." - one of my flatmates. I don't have earrings, I have ear piercings.

Other response has been somewhat tame and typically positive.
