It might be intimidating to speak this directly to your dad, but it would be completely appropriate for you to say "dad, I'd really like to spend time with you but I'm not comfortable hanging out with ted and linda." You're not judging them when you say this, you're merely telling your dad what you need to stay in relationship with him.

You'll hear from other helpful people so if this doesn't click, fear not.

    Peace,

Really listen to what they are saying, and come up with intelligent responses. Try and leave swearing out of it. You might get into a really good political debate, which will benefit all of you-as long as you keep it clean. No name calling (unless Michele Bachmann comes up..hehe), no curse words, only the facts.

If health care comes up, state your opinion and why you feel that way. Say you're scared about the debt. Say you're an ardent capitalist and want the government to stay out if health care. Say you're a total socialist and don't care how much you get taxed as long as health care is affordable to all. It doesn't matter what your view is, just be able to back it up, have thought carefully about it, and explain yourself articulately and eloquently.

As for the jokes, keep 'em clean, but also be able to laugh at your own political party's shortcomings, as well as be able to dish 'em right back at Ted and Linda.

And if they're drunk, well, they still may be able to talk politics...Some people have that ability (especially if they aren't the angry-drunk type_. Regardless, drunk people can be fun to play mind games with.

I agree with the Padre. Let your dad know that you'd like to spend time with just him. Spending time with him and his friends just doesn't cut it for you. Give him suggestions of what you'd like to do instead with him and your sister - because I'll admit that as a dad, I'm sort of clueless! Maybe you'd like to go to a movie with him, or to the museum, or bowling. Offer up an alternative, and decline the invitation to dinner.
