I don't think this is something that people can really give advice for, but hugs and support are seriously needed here.

A lot of you would have seen my posts around the place about my sister. A while back, she was diagnosed with a pretty big brain tumour, and finally after way too long screwing around by the doctors, her surgery is tomorrow. It's going to be risky, I'm freaking the hell out, and I really need to cling to my ECers. Any messages for her will be passed on, and if you've been in a similar kind of situation, I'd really love to know how you got through it without becoming a puddle on the floor.

My mom was diagnosed with cancer when I was eleven, she died seven years later. Dealing with cancer is tough, it pulls on the entire family and can completely change dynamics. Try not to worry about the surgery: chances are, it'll go fine and the worst bit will be recovery (especially if she's given chemo or radiation).

Encourage your sister to find an outlet, my mom painted; others knit, read, write, sing, etc. Art is a good way to keep yourself spiritually grounded, which is very important in cancer recovery. The other thing I recommend is that your sister join a cancer support group. Having people who share your problem makes it feel less lonely, and people who join support groups have better recovery rates.

Apart from that, hope and wait. There's really not much else you can do.

I should probably say, it's not cancer. The tumour is benign, but big and awkwardly placed. There's a genetic condition in the familythat causes benign tumours (neurofibromatosis type 2) and we both have a few small tumours, she's just been unlucky enough to sprout a big one.
    And thank you all (*hug*)

Jut to keep you guys updated, she went into surgery at about 8am, three and a half hours ago. It won't be finished until about 4, so my parents and I are home now. The surgeon sounded pretty optimistic for a surgeon, he said he thinks he can remove 99% of the tumour so radiotherapy shouldn't be necessary, and the chances of death or "catastrophic" complications are remote.

The hugs are incredibly appreciated. *hugs you all*
