You say you are going "to see someone" - but you didn't indicate who/in what regard.

The reason I say this is because, as I understand it, the path to becoming a fully transgendered person is quite a lengthy one...and involves, amongst other things, quite a deal of psychological evaluation.

If you are seeing someone in regard to starting that journey - I would have thought it quite likely that you would fairly soon have to talk to someone familiar with ALL the psychological implications - who might well be able to give you some sensible advice, based on past experience, of how best to approach this.

I have sent you a Private Message with a link to a webpage that a friend made for her work colleagues, explaining the process and answering the likely questions.

It is a private page that she does not want linked publically, which is why I haven't given the address here. If anyone else thinks it will be useful, please send me a PM asking for the address.

    Hi,

As you're in your teens, "Mermaids" may be a good place for help, support and advice; they have a mail list you can join. Their website is http://www.mermaids.freeuk.com/

Where to start..? Well, from a quick read through stuff on the Mermaids site I think you probably should try to get a referral via your GP to "The Portman Clinic", as mentioned here.

There are NHS Gender Identity Clinics within the UK, but (as of a few years ago, my information may be out-of-date) the GICs would only take patients over the age of 21. The Portman Clinic appears to be the only place that'll take on younger patients with gender dysphoria.

Note that the NHS route can be a long and frustrating process; depending on where you are, your Primary Care Trust's policy, funding issues and a raft of other tedious administrivia and beaurocracy; it can take a while.

The process begins with a period of psychiatric evaluation; basically to ensure you're sane, really are transsexual, and are likely to cope with the process of transition. It's an unusual medical condition in that a psychiatrist has to diagnose you as not having anything psychiatrically wrong with you (or at least nothing which precludes you being TS) before you get any treatment!

Feel free to pick my brains; if my experiences are of any use or help to someone else then that makes it all the more worthwhile.

    Regards, Jo

Thats a pretty expensive process isnt it...i mean having to buy the hormones and the sugery etc. Dont mean to be Johnny RainCloud and ruin your parade, but i guess you have to know what your up against. We all here will support you every step of the way, but like Jo A said, the transition process i can only imagine is extremely frustrating. I wish you all the best and good luck.

I agree. You need to be yourself. You hiding your true self is the same as us gay guys hiding in our closets.

I'm sure you've read Jo A's post and know it will be a long journey. But the sooner you can start the sooner you will reach the end you are hoping for.

Please take note of Jo A's advice and support. You might want to send her a PM directly too - she's a great person to know!

    Hiya,
It doesn't have to be... most decent GPs will convert a private prescription for hormones; and the surgery is available on the NHS (they've no choice in the matter having been taken to court a few times... but that's another story...) I started off with the private approach and only ever paid for the appointments with the specialist psychiatrist; my GP converted the prescriptions and I've never paid for hormones.

The main thing is to "get your foot in the door", as it were; get referred to an NHS clinic so you're on their "treatment pathway". Things are improving; in some areas the waiting lists for initial appointments with a Gender Identity Clinic are a matter of weeks. I think it's down to 6 months in Leeds now; the clinic's expanded and taken on more staff. It is a bit of a "postcode lottery" - though that's just the NHS generally.

I don't mind answering any questions either in the forum or via PM; I don't mind discussing anything - I wouldn't be on here if that wasn't the case

    All the best, Jo

    Hi,
Oh, definitely. I used to be a very shy individual, I was always very uncomfortable in social situations; trying to keep a check on my natural mannerisms and behaviour was hard work. Trying to pretend to be a guy when you're not one is a pretty tough acting job and I wasn't very good at it. Paul knows what I'm like now...

    Regards, Jo
