I think you should start with some small talk about this and that and then you could move on to asking him some questions about himself like what his interests are, about his career and family and you could ask if he has a boyfriend. He may then ask similar questions of you like do you have a girlfriend at which point you could correct and say "boyfriend actually, and no, I don't have one" Something like that, just drop it casually.
