Opinions on this Coming Out Letter would be appreciated.

Discussion in 'Coming Out Advice' started by Count Duckula, Apr 14, 2013.

  1. I've wanted to write a coming out letter to my mom for some time now, but I never could find the words. I have a really hard time expressing myself, so I spent the past hour or so scouring EC to find ideas of what to say, and here is what I came up with. I would like people's opinions on it before I send it off (assuming I actually gather the courage to do so), so please be as critical as possible. I hope the length isn't too off-putting. Thanks in advance to those who do reply.

You've covered every base extensively, and it seems like you put your emotions into word perfectly. I hope it goes well when you mail/e-mail it.

it's perfect, I think you have said it exactly as it has to be.

  5. Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I really need it.

I'll probably wait until tomorrow afternoon to email it, after she gets off work. I don't want her to read it and start crying while she's stuck at work. Plus, I don't want her to have to wait too long to call me, if she needs to, which she likely will. Hopefully my courage won't desert me by then.

Not to be crass, but... It's too late for nerves. You've sent it, and that took lots of guts. Be proud of that, no matter what. And besides, it may be presumptuous to call it the biggest mistake of your life, because you're being brave and true to yourself, and you're trusting others with this information (which is an honour).

Let us know how things turn out. We're here for you, and we're proud of you =)

  18. My mom called me back. She took it really well. I don't know why I was so freaked out. She said that it was the "sweetest letter and [she] will cherish it forever." I expected her to call back bawling, but she seemed almost happy to learn that I'm gay. She also pulled out a bunch of cheesy lines about this not changing who I am and stuff like that. I'm extremely glad I sent that letter. Her response was beyond what I ever dreamed of.

Thanks to all of your encouragement. If it weren't for y'all, I wouldn't have had the strength.

As an added bonus, I spontaneously decided to come out a friend via facebook message. This has been a pretty good day.

That's great, congratulations! Both on being brave enough to send such a wonderful letter and on your mom's reaction
