Well, I came back to my hometown to visit some friends (and do a freelance job I managed to pick up), and was out to dinner tonight with some of my former best friends who I had not seen since graduating high school. It all started out really good, with all of us updating each other on our current job status, relationships, etc... and then finally, one of my friends looked right at me and said, "well, if facebook tells no lies... [pause]... is it true? What I saw on your... interests?" All heads turn towards me, and I quickly glance around the table with a slight smirk on my face. I mentally debated whether this was a good idea to admit anything, and figured, eh, what the hell. "I thought you might ask about that at some point. Yes, the rumors are in fact true." With that a slight sigh could be heard in unison as the question that most had been afraid to ask has been finally answered. No one had an issue, and offered their support, and then we quickly moved on to other subjects. It's amazing to me how opinions and attitudes of the "general public" have changed in my hometown area towards the LGBT community. In an area where I used to fear in hiding, to suddenly feel so open and accepted, is remarkable.
