Six years ago today, on Martin Luther King Day, I got an e-mail from my son telling me he is gay. I can't speak for him except to say that he is in a happy relationship with somebody he loves.

My life has changed in significant ways. I have been involved in PFLAG almost that entire time first serving as a board member and then being elected as President, Vice-President, and then President again. I have been able to help dozens of parents accept and love their gay children. I got involved with Empty Closets which has been a joy in my life. I had the opportunity to go to Washington, DC to the National PFLAG conference which was an opportunity I probably wouldn't of had otherwise. To see all that history and to stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where MLK gave his "I have a dream" speech is something I will never forget. I have talked with Republican legislators about my son making one of them cry! I have marched in Pride parades and seen and felt the admiration for the organization that I have grown to love dearly! I played a significant role in getting anti-discrimination laws passed in Oregon.

I think the BEST thing that has happened to me is the wonderful friends that I have made and continue to make. People who share my beliefs that living your authentic life is the BEST thing you can do for yourself and others. I wouldn't trade my gay kid for a straight one for anything!

    Becky, you made me cry!
I hope you can somehow know how much your presence, acceptance and sound advice helps all of us along our journey ~ and how much we (I) appreciate you.

For those of us who no longer have a mom to go to, you're the best!

XD This makes me feel like I'm taking where I live for granted. I'd go on so many field trips to DC and visit those memorials and think it to be so boring. The most fascinating thing to me was going to a two-story McDonald's. Maybe I'm just not old enough to appreciate it, haha, and no offense :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

But wow, you're an amazing person and EC is so lucky to have you :]

Oh my gosh, NEVER take that for granted! DC is such a beautiful place with so much history! I love it there and can't wait to go back. I shared those steps with so many other PFLAG moms who fight for our children's civil rights every day. MLK gave his life doing it. I have tears in my eyes right now just as I did that night when I was there. We have come a long way and it is truly remarkable that tomorrow we will have our first African American President. This President will do more for your civil rights as a gay American than any other President ever in history. Marvel in that! I do!!!!

    Re: 5 Years Ago Today.....

You know, Becky, when I think of moms like you, I always draw a comparison to Debbie from "Queer as Folk", though not as crazy or zany as she is. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that that comparison is a bit of a disservice. For as great a character and role model as Debbie is, she doesn't even compare to the real moms out there, the ones like you who have had to face so many external issues that they weren't prepared for, as well as the whole gamut of internal issues as a mother of a gay child.

For you (and all other moms) to do it with such aplomb and grace and pride, well that just makes me thankful that there are indeed voices out there just like yours.

Your son is a lucky guy.

    HUGS!

I usually make Adam a rainbow cake to celebrate the occasion but I couldn't do that now that he's in Louisiana. So I sent him this:

Becky, you're an absolutely astounding mother. The world would be a far better place if there were more mothers like you.

Also, I want that cake. It looks deliciously gay.
