These were firsts of me. I guess I surprised myself a bit.

A couple of weeks ago I was walking with a friend of mine in downtown, and for some reason a guy looked at us and asked if we are boyfriends. I just turned around and said: Do you have a problem with that? And continued walking. I felt bad for my friend though because he is straight and has a girlfriend. Not sure what went through his head when he heard that....

And the other night I went out with a couple of friends (who I have only recently got to know) for a coffee so to get to know each other better. Afterward we went to a local pub for a few drinks. During our chats, I was asked if I have a girl friend. I never got the chance to answer my friend's question properly. So I turned to my friend and said: "just to answer your question, no I don't have a girlfriend and if I would be dating someone, it wouldn't be a girl either."

It felt good to say that! Yep! I am out now.

Hey thats so cool! Can i ask one thing though which intrests me. When that person asked 'are you boyfriends?' why is it we automatically go on the defensive and assume that person is going to have a problem with it. Obviosly you have to take into account of that person and the way the question is asked but i just wonder sometimes how someone may ask that question because they are intrested in the fact of homosexuality. Just a thought!

It was the way the question was asked. It was a complete stranger sitting on the side walk and just as we passed he popped the question. For some reason it irritated me quite a bit, and I felt the need to say something. I think that if someone is interested in the fact of homosexuality one would approach it differently and also have a different tone. But this guy just wasn't interested in 'learning' about homosexuality.

hahah that guy probably was hitting on you guys, i dont think a blatantly homophobic person would come up to you and ask, unless they were truly disturbed.

that story is like a classic feel good coming out story. it made me happy!

Being truly disturbed about such things is pretty much a text-book definition of homophobia. :icon_wink

Good call with answering your friend's question, too. I am totally stealing that. =D

I came out to the first person yesterday in a similar sort of way. They asked me 'do you have a girlfriend yet?' and I said 'not really'. They then replied with 'Why not?' and I just said 'I don't want a girlfriend' then they asked 'well, do you want a boyfriend?' and they laughed a bit. I replied with "Yeah, kinda". They looked at me with a straight face and I started to laugh. I think it made her feel a bit more comfortable. We've been friends for ages.
