So anyone who's been following knows that I told my Mom yesterday. She took it really well and was really supportive. My main concern is how worried she is about me now...but we've talked about this and I think it'll be okay. Now for the update: when I told my Mom, the two of us talked about how best to tell my Dad. Fast forward to the next morning...my Mom was obviously upset, and my Dad picked up on this...so she told him! So my wake up this morning was to my Mom, explaining that she had told my Dad. I wasn't angry at all that she told him...actually it was kind of expected. What wasn't expected was my Dad's reaction: he's completely fine!! I was blown away. Literally, this is just not an issue for him. Like my Mom, he's concerned about me...but in terms of acceptance, it was better than I could have hoped for. As it turns out, my Dad had just gotten into the show "Teachers", and he had taped 3-4 episodes for us to watch together. As fate would have it, all the episodes dealt with a new teacher at the school: a gay guy!! One episode was completely about sexual orientation and self-discovery and whatnot. The two of us were laughing at it together!! It was honestly one of the best moments of my life! I even told my Dad & Mom that never in a million years did I picture us all sitting in the living room laughing at something like that on the day I come out of the closet. It was surreal. So all that to say - What a weekend!! It was a huge step for me...but there's still many more to go! Next up: my brothers...yikes! (but having my parent's support makes that a lot easier!) I think I'm finally ready to use one of these: (!)
Oh, to add to how awesome my Dad's reaction was: My Dad's favorite saying is "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff". And that's what he told me. Of course I laughed and told him that had it been me breaking the news to him, my lead in was going to be that I had some "Big Stuff" to tell him. He just laughed and said that my being gay was "Small Stuff"!!!! (!)
Congratulations on coming out to your parents! Glad that your parents took it so well and are supportive. That's awesome.: )
