It's interesting how certain events lead me to remember this place

I went to a birthday party earlier this week (it was kind of boring as I don't drink...). Anyway, I started chatting to this girl (let's call her Lindy) and I'm so used to people knowing I'm gay, it just came up in casual conversation. I think I mentioned some guy I kissed... She went quiet and looked at me with a very weird look in her eyes. "Did you say guy?" Lindy asked. Having thought that she knew, I just plainly said: "Yeh..."

Suddenly she starts stroking my arm and says: "So, you're real?" By now I'm thoroughly confused. What is she on about? I wonder. "Yes, I'm real..." Lindy's eyes widen and she starts smiling, "Wow! I've never met anyone gay before! I've only seen them on TV."

Inside I start smiling, no laughing, at this girl who's so excited to meet a gay guy. I start wondering whether or not she's going to ask me to go do shoe shopping with her...

"I always thought you were a myth propogated by the media or something," Lindy said, "Wow! You're SO awesome!" Now I am really laughing inside, while hse continues to touch me. I decide it's time to inform this poor girl.

I sit her down on a chair, me opposite her, and I start telling about gay people, how they are just like everyone else, how I'm not suddenly some sort of slut and that I've still got real feelings. The basic questions of: how did you know, when did you find how, do your parents know, obviously came up. Around here, someone (drunk...) came by and grabbed her to go dance. But the rest of the night, every time I saw her, she just had to touch me to ensure that I'm still a real person.

Anyone ever have THIS kind of reaction to a coming out?

PS: Names changed to protect the ignorant.

You mean, all this time when I was skipping down the sidewalk naked in the rain singing "sining in the rain" people could hear and see me!?! That's awkward...

(just in case you didn't get it, I was joking there, though I do do everything except the being naked thing part of things when it's raining...)

That is really funny, kinda scary that there is such great ignorance, but still really fuuny.

Yup! This incident also made my day! I'm quite impressed with myself for showing someone that we're normal people!

Lindy is about 20 years old, so it is kind of weird that she thought that we were a myth... Perhaps a very conservative and closed upbringing? At least she couldn't get over it to call me "awesome!" Can't wait to see her around on campus again

Now, I've got a date with a unicorn, at the gay bar under the rainbow...

I can't say I've met someone who thinks gay people are a myth. However, I've met people who obviously think there are no gay people where they live or work, or that they don't otherwise know any. I've felt like a myth on multiple occasions when my classmates (or others) start talking about gay people (sometimes not in the best of lights) and they don't even realize that there's one sitting right behind them! I swear I'm gonna say something the next time that happens. I think very few people (maybe President Ahmadinejad of Iran) actually think that gay people don't exist. Many people, in my experience, think that gay people do exist, but only as exceedingly flamboyant caricatures who live in NYC, LA, SF, or in a television. As if "there's no way any are in MY neighborhood." Not that there's anything wrong with fitting a stereotype- some people do more than others. But I wanna to see the look on those people's faces when they discover that they actually do know someone who's gay :icon_wink

So that makes you a person who thought that people who thought that gay people weren't real were not real? I didn't know those people were real.

Wow, first cartoons, then reality tv, then gay people, tv people are brilliant!
